OVFL PLAYOFFS: Lions shock Spears, meet Grenadiers in Varsity final; Jr. Mustangs & Myers Riders to face off for JV Championship

The varsity Cambridge Lions have done something that no other team was able to do throughout the 2016 Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) season.

On Saturday night, the Lions pulled off a huge upset as they took down the undefeated Niagara Spears 41-7.

With this win, the Lions will battle for the OVFL Varsity Championship against the Kingston Grenadiers who escaped with a 21-16 win over Ottawa Myers Riders.

The Varsity Championship Final is set for Saturday August 6th at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium.  Kickoff is 5:30pm.

In the Junior Varsity Division, the undefeated London Jr. Mustangs are one game away from completing the perfect season.  However, the only team standing in their way is the Ottawa Myers Riders. These teams will meet this upcoming weekend in the Championship final.

The Junior Varsity Championship is on Saturday August 6th at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium.  Game start is 2:00pm.

Here are the results from the OVFL Conference Finals:

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 41, NIAGARA SPEARS 7:

At Kiwanis Field on Saturday night, the Cambridge Lions stunned the Niagara Spears 41-7 to punch their ticket to the OVFL Varsity Championship.

The Lions meet Kingston Grenadiers on Saturday evening.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 21, OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 16:

At Minto Field, Nepean Sportsplex, Tanner DeJong completed 25 passes in 36 attempts for 337 yards as the Kingston Grenadiers advanced to the OVFL Varsity Championships for the first time since 2004 with a 21-16 win over Ottawa Myers Riders.

Harry Robinson rushed for 77 yards.  Additionally, Nik Reyes amassed 110 receiving yards.

Brendan Steele scored all three touchdowns – each score was on a one yard sneak.

Defensively, Shawn Miller registered five solo and four assisted tackles in the game.  Joey Morris had a fumble recovery.

LONDON JR. MUSTANGS 51, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 8:

At TD Waterhouse Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the London Jr Mustangs were crowned 2016 Adam Conference Champions after crushing visiting Etobicoke Eagles 51-8.

The Jr. Mustangs advance to the league championship where they will square off against Ottawa Myers Riders.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 43, WEST DURHAM DOLPHINS 21:

At Beckwith Recreation Park on Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa Myers Riders return back to the OVFL Junior Varsity Championship after cruising to a 43-21 win over West Durham Dolphins.

The Myers Riders won the championship last year,.
