Jr. Tiger-cats won 24-0 over the Jr Argos and the Eskimos beat the RedBlacks 25-12
The Kinsmen Minor Football League (KMFL) kicked off this past Saturday at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School in Peterborough.
The 2016 season has brought major change to a league that has been the bedrock of minor football in the Kawartha’s for 35 seasons. What is the change you may ask? Well for the past 35 seasons, the teams that have been in the KMFL have been the Eagles, the Steelers, the Stars and the Chargers, this is no longer the case.
The KMFL has a strong tradition of Canadian football, it is one of very few minor program’s in Ontario that plays 3 down football at the minor levels (ages 8- 13). The only thing that has not been very Canadian about the KMFL over the past 35 years are the names of the teams who play in it.
This past Saturday that all changed, the KMFL was very proud to unveil it’s future team names and uniforms. The 4 programs, 8 teams (Sr and Jr) in all will now be named after Canadian football teams, The Argos, Tiger-Cats, Eskimos and the Red Blacks.
After talking to players and parents about this change on Saturday it seemed very clear that this was a really great move for the league. Players seem to be really excited to be sporting the new looks and the fact the league is moving in a positive direction seems to have overwhelming praise and support from all.
Not exactly sure what we can expect from the KMFL in the future, but for the 150 plus players it is already looking like they are off to a great start.
