Mount Allison Mounties quarterback Jakob Loucks is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending August 26, 2017.

A second-year psychology student from Cornwall, Ont., Loucks threw three touchdowns in Mount Allison’s 64-23 win Saturday over the Acadia Axemen in Sackville, N.B.

The 2016 U Sports rookie of the year, Loucks went 29 for 36 for 402 yards passing and had four carries for 53 yards rushing in the 2017 season opener.

The Mounties see action next this Friday when they visit the two-time defending champion StFX X-Men in a rematch of the 2016 Subway AUS Loney Bowl.

Saint Mary’s Huskies defensive back Antoine Lyte-Myers has been named the AUS football defensive player of the week. 

A third-year commerce student from Toronto, Lyte-Myers had two interceptions in the Huskies’ 38-23 win over the two-time defending StFX X-Men in Friday’s AUS season opener. He returned the first six yards and the second 10 yards for a touchdown.

Lyte-Myers also had two solo tackles in the win, including a sack for a loss of one yard.

The Huskies now have a bye week. They next see action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they will travel to Lennoxville, Que. to face off against the Bishop’s Gaiters.

Saint Mary’s Huskies kicker Brian Hope has been named the AUS football special teams player of the week.

A second-year arts student from Port Coquitlam, B.C., Hope scored 14 points in the Huskies 38-23 win over StFX Friday night in Halifax.

Hope made good on four of six field goal attempts and was successful on both point-after attempts. He also averaged 35.9 yards on 10 punts in the game—three of which were downed inside the 20—and had five kickoffs for 185 yards.

Montréal, August 28, 2017 – Laval quarterback Hugo Richard, Montréal lineman Philippe Lemieux-Cardinal and Montréal returner Raphaël Major-Dagenais are the RSEQ University Football student-athletes of the week for the period ending August 27, 2017.

Highlights:

Hugo Richard picked up right where he left off with the Rouge et Or in 2016. The fourth-year quarterback had a big game against Sherbrooke on Saturday, completing 70.7% of his passes (29-for-41) for 361 yards and three touchdown passes. The MVP of the 2016 Vanier Cup also ran in for a TD of his own in Laval’s resounding 40-5 victory over the Vert & Or.

Highlights:

In his first taste of university football action, Universite de Montreal’s Philippe Lemieux-Cardinal made quite the first impression. The rookie defensive lineman piled up six tackles, including one for loss, in the Carabins’ 37-19 win over the Stingers at Concordia. Lemieux-Cardinal also forced a pair of fumbles and batted down a pass in his impressive debut.

Highlights:

Major-Dagenais took full advantage of the league’s first game of 2017 to formally introduce himself to the Quebec Conference. In the Carabins’ 37-19 win over the Stingers, the receiver/special teams player picked up 63 yards in kickoff and punt returns in addition to shining on a trick play where a faked field goal was turned into a 14-yard play for a touchdown courtesy of Major-Dagenais.

OUA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending August 29, 2017.

OFFENCE: Matteo Del Brocco (Kingsville, Ont) – 4th year  – Queen’s

Matteo Del Brocco had a career performance on Saturda, recording a career-high 139-receiving yards on nine receptions against the Carleton ravens.

He clinched Queen’s first touchdown of the regular season with an 18-yard score during the third quarter. Quarterback Nate Hobbs would find Del Brocco once again for a 50-yard score, his second touchdown of the game.

During the 2016-17 campaign, he had 30 receptions for 379 yards and four touchdowns.

He also owns the longest touchdown reception in Queen’s history and 4th longest in U Sports history, with a 108 yard  touchdown back in 2015.

 

DEFENCE:  Alain Cimankinda (Gatineau, QC) – 2nd yr – Guelph

In his first game in a Gryphon uniform, defensive end Alain Cimankinda put together an outstanding performance, racking up 3.5 sacks to go along with 9 tackles.

The Gatineau, Quebec native came up with several timely plays, including a sack late in the 4th quarter (1:30 remaining) which forced an Ottawa punt to get the ball back to the Gryphon offence.

Cimankinda, who played his CEGEP football at Champlain-Lennoxville in Quebec under current Gryphons offensive coordinator Jean-Francois Joncas, spent one season at the New Mexico Military Institute (NCAA – Junior College) before arriving at Guelph.

Cimankinda’s rookie campaign is off to a flying start, with the dynamic defensive end providing a constant disturbance in the Gee-Gees backfield throughout the game

 

SPECIAL TEAMS: Lewis Ward (Kingston, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Ottawa

The fifth-year kicker was the focal point of the scoring for the Gee-Gees in a victory on the road in Guelph to begin the season.

The Kingston native was locked in all afternoon, going 6 of 8 for the game, including two in overtime that led Ottawa to a win. His longest field goal on the day was from 43 yards.

Ward was an OUA Second Team All-Star in 2016-17.
