Manitoba looks to avoid first 0-3 start to season since 1998
The Manitoba Bisons football team currently holds a 0-2 record and seeks to avoid their first 0-3 start of the Canada West season since 1998 when that team went 0-8. Manitoba (0-2) will travel to play the UBC Thunderbirds (1-1) on Saturday, September 18 with game time at 3 p.m. CT. This is the first of two meetings between the two teams in the 2010 conference regular season (Manitoba will host UBC at home on Sat., Oct. 30 to finish the regular season). Last season, the Bisons prevailed on the field with two wins but the Sept. 19/09 home game result of 36-10 win by Manitoba was reversed to a 1-0 forfeited game loss to UBC due to an ineligible player. The Herd then exacted some revenge with a 25-17 win at UBC on Oct. 23/09. The Herd has won the last four games against UBC on the road with the last time the Bisons lost at Thunderbirds Stadium occurred on October 15/04 (L 41-22). With the tightly bunch conference standings after two games, Manitoba is only one game out of a playoff spot while UBC is only one game out of first place. In team conference stats, the two teams rank high in some major categories. In scoring offence, UBC is third (29.5 points per game) while Manitoba is sixth and last (8.5 points per game), while in scoring defence, the Bisons are sixth with 38.0 points per game and UBC is fourth at 24.0. In total offence, UBC is third with 411.0 yards per game and Manitoba is sixth at 307.0. In total defence, Manitoba is second with 353.0 yards per game and the T-Birds are fifth at 409.5. In pass offence, the UBC is sixth (199.1 yards); Bisons are seventh (152.7). In pass defence, UBC is fourth (235.5 yards); Manitoba is sixth (158.0). In rush offence, Manitoba is fourth (149.0 yards per game) and the T-Birds are second (175.5). In rush defence, the Bisons are fourth at 167.5 yards per game while UBC is first at 130.0.
The game can be heard live on radio at 101.5 FM (umfm.com) with pre-game starting at 2:45 p.m. CT. Ken Wiebe will be handling play-by-play with Mike Howard as the colour commentary.
