FOOTBALL CHEETAHS CLAW BACK INTO WIN COLUMN

THE VANIER COLLEGE MEN’S AAA FOOTBALL CHEETAHS SAW THEIR EARLY SEASON RECORD IMPROVE TO 2-1 WITH AN IMPRESSIVE 46-9 ROAD TRIUMPH OVER EDOUARD-MONTPETIT THIS PAST SATURDAY.

The Cheetahs opened the scoring at the 7:18 mark of the first quarter as quarterback Jérémi Roch (left) connected on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Norzil and Josh MacDuffie added his first of five converts on the day. A safety on each side then made it 9-2 after the opening frame.
The Cheetahs salted the game away in the second quarter as Roch hooked up with Norzil once again on a 21-yard touchdown pass only 1:35 into the quarter. Kayin Marchand Wright then returned a punt 50 yards for another major score with only 56 seconds to play in the half.
Vanier then chalked up 16 more points in the third quarter on a 50-yard touchdown bomb from Roch to Vincent Cléroux, a Josh MacDuffie field goal and a trio of safeties. The Cheetahs rounded out their scoring in the fourth quarter as back-up quarterback Benoit Lacasse hooked up with Akeem Hoyte-Charles on a 9-yard touchdown toss at 7:42.
The Cheetahs were led on the offense by quarterback Jérémi Roch who completed 11 of 20 pass attempts for 159 yards. Nick D’Andrea paced the running attack with 46 yards on 5 carries while Jesse Lacle rushed for 33 yards on 10 attempts. Vincent Cléroux topped all Vanier receivers with 2 catches for 73 yards. Matthew Norzil also had a big game with 3 receptions for 30 yards as did Jimmy Mouhteros with 4 catches for 46 yards. Byron Perez-Archambault (right) anchored a stellar defensive effort with 5 tackles.

Vanier is back in action on Saturday when they play host to the Montmorency Nomades (1-2) in a home game that will be played at the Concordia Stadium. The kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
