The Varsity Football team travelled to London, ON last Friday for a pre-season game against the London South High School Lions. Earlier in the week, the team watched a London news story pegging the talented and well-coached Lions as a favourite to win the London city championship. Although the Lions have a strong team, ultimately the skill and speed of the Saints prevailed in a 21-7 triumph.
Running back Yannick Harou flashed electric speed in rushing for one touchdown and hauling in a key touchdown reception. Slotback Casey Cook caught 5 passes and scored the other Saints’ touchdown. Receivers Josh Smith and Jamal Kett flashed their incredible big play ability in both the passing and return game, while reliable veteran Dave Head moved the chains in some key second down situations. Quarterback Mark Sandell demonstrated tremendous poise and confidence as he continues to work hard to develop into an elite player. The offensive line pass protected very well and frequently created large running lanes for Harou to cut past the Lions front seven.
On defence, the Saints secondary swarmed the South receivers and limited them to only 1 completion. Linebackers Matt Mardini, Chris Houston and Thomas DiFalco flew around the field all afternoon, while the defensive line frequently controlled the line of scrimmage.
Also of note, kicker and punter Alex Harris did an outstanding job in helping the Saints control field position, while also converting all three of his convert attempts.
As should be expected after only 5 days of practice, the game was filled with physical and mental errors. Today’s performance emphasizes that the 2010 Saints have the opportunity to achieve great things, but are still a long way from reaching their full potential.
The 2010 CISAA season kicks off Saturday, September 18th as the Saints travel to Villanova College for their homecoming.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
