CJFL: Shootout in Saskatoon highlights PFC action, Rams 1st win in BCFC (video)


Week two of the Prairie Football Conference featured the Saskatoon Hilltops 65th anniversary celebrations as they hosted the Winnipeg Rifles, winning 45-33.

The Hilltops jumped out of the gate with touchdowns of each of their first three possessions, as Chase Bradshaw threw for a career-high 405 yards with John Trumpy getting 2 majors. Kyle McGinnis and Jace Muggli would account for the other two scores.

Winnipeg would get back into it as pivot Ryan Marsch who threw for 426 yards and 4 major scores connected with receivers Matt Lariviere & Scott Naujoks late in the second quarter to make it a 28-19 game at halftime.

Saskatoon kicker Zack Schmidt & Winnipeg kicker Brad Mikoluff each added field goals. The teams would combine for over 1100 yards of offense; Saskatoon 621 to Winnipeg’s 496.


The Calgary Colts defense continued their ferocious ways as they knocked down 8 Edmonton Huskies’ passes. Defensive End Prince Baffoh had a pair of sacks and a 46-yard fumble return for a major score in Calgary’s 24-10 victory.

Regina Thunder’s Kolten Solomon & Edmonton Wildcat’s Taylor Souster traded first quarter touchdowns, and then it was the Thunder who pulled away as receivers Jon Probe, Mike Scheinbein, and tailback Thomas Ringlein would find the end zone. Solomon would add his 2nd touchdown of the day on a 23-yard run in the third frame.

In week four of the British Columbia Football Conference over the weekend the Langley Rams recorded their first win of the season after a 28-10 victory over the Kamloops Broncos at Hillside Stadium.

The 1-3 Rams were able to compile 488 offensive yards led by All-Canadian Nick Downey. He would catch six balls for 167 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Rookie quarterback Brandon Leyh was 11 of 16 for 295 yards and found Downey twice in the end zone. Leyh would spread the ball around perfectly as five other receivers caught passes including Jerod Zaleski who made five receptions for 102 yards.

The Rams “D” created three takeaways, all three were interceptions. Jeff Paras made two picks, while Chris Mulangu had the other. Arie Nakagawa would again lead the team in tackles with five and assisted on two others.

The Broncos fall to 1-3 as their lone major came on a Jesse Neufeld touchdown pass to Brennan Plante. The lefty QB would finish 11 of 24 for 190 yards, but threw all three interceptions.

Bronco linebacker Mitch Day moved to four behind the BCFC record for fumble recoveries with the ninth recovery of his career.

In other BCFC action the Okanagan Sun and Vancouver Island Raiders stayed undefeated. The Sun beat the Westshore Rebels 49-7, while the Raiders beat the Chilliwack Huskers 52-3.

Defensive Lineman Steven Doege of the Sun set a new BCFC record for career sacks and has compiled 24.5 in 24 career games.
