ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The StFX X-Men defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 23-0 in AUS exhibition football action Saturday afternoon at Oland Stadium in Antigonish, NS.
More than 800 fans watched the X-Men take a 3-0 lead on a 67-yard drive to open the game, which culminated when Anthony Alix kicked a 10-yard field goal at 4:03 of the first quarter.
Cory Wensley was the first of five quarterbacks to take snaps for the X-Men. He was 7-for-12 for 75 yards.
Alix doubled the X-Men lead to 6-0 at 5:24 of the second quarter with his second field goal – a 17-yard kick. The X-Men extended their lead to 13-0 before the half on a one-yard touchdown run by freshman Ashton Dickson, who rushed for 91 yards on 11 carries. The one-yard plunge was set up by a 28–yard reception by X-Men wide receiver Damone Williams.
Alix wrapped up the first half scoring (16-0) with a 48-yard field goal at the 13-minute mark of the second quarter. In the third quarter, the X-Men extended their lead to 19-0 at 8:07 on a field goal by Jeremy Ford. Ford added his second field goal and a single point on a missed field goal in the fourth quarter to make the final 23-0 for the X-Men.
For the X-Men, quarterback Jahmari Bennett was 4-for-8 for 42 yards, with 22 rushing yards on eight carries.
The X-Men rushed for 133 yards on 31 carries, while passing for 173 yards.
On the defensive side, linebacker Brendan Hamilton and defensive back Bryce Szela led the way with five tackles apiece.
Mounties’ starting quarterback Jake Hotchkiss was 4-for-8 for 17 yards, with an interception in limited play, while Iain MacMillan led the rushing attack with 28 yards on three carries.
The Mounties rushed for 108 yards on 30 carries. They amassed 84 yards through the air. Adam Molnar was the top receiver for Mount Allison with three receptions for 14 yards. Te Nguyen led the Mounties with 4.5 tackles and 0.5 sacks on defense.
The X-Men open the regular season Saturday, Sept. 10 when they host the Acadia Axemen at Oland Stadium at 2 p.m. The Mounties will be on the road to visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
