HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending November 6, 2011.
OFFENCE: Tyler Varga, Western Mustangs, Running Back
Tyler Varga (Kitchener, Ont.) did it all for the Mustangs on Saturday in their win over Windsor in the OUA semifinal. Varga rushed for 209 yards on 33 carries, scored two touchdowns and for good measure threw a pass to Brian Marshall in the final minutes of the game to secure a key first down. Varga was the second leading rusher in the OUA on the season with 793 yards and led the OUA and the CIS with 15 rushing touchdowns. At 5-10 and 218 pounds, Varga’s presence on the football field is undeniable.
DEFENCE: Joey Cupido, McMaster Marauders, Defensive Back
This third year defensive back recorded a total of four interceptions in McMaster’s semifinal win over the No. 8 Queen’s Gaels. Four interceptions in one game ties the CIS and OUA records for most in a game and sets a new school record. His four interceptions included one on the first play of the game. Cupido also won the Porter Player of the Game at the OUA semifinals.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Darryl Wheeler, Western Mustangs, Punter
Darryl Wheeler, in his final year of OUA football, put on a punting clinic on Saturday afternoon against the Windsor Lancers in the OUA semifinal. Wheeler had six punts on the day, averaging 46 yards, two of which found their way inside the Windsor 20 yard line and one booming 56 yard punt that helped pin Windsor deep in their own zone. The 5-11, 213 pound teacher’s college student led the OUA in punting in the regular season with 41.3 yards per kick average and he continued his dominance in the kicking game on Saturday, improving upon his average in difficult windy conditions.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
