Even though basketball was his main sport growing up, Mahlique decided to start playing football for his high school team, the Don Bosco Eagles. Once he began playing organized football, he was hooked to the sport.
During the summer months, Mahlique has suited up for both the Etobicoke Eagles and the Brampton Bulldogs of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). In July 2011,the Eagles standout travelled to Lethbridge, Alberta to play in the Football Canada Cup as a member of Team Ontario East. Recently, he was selected to the GTA Current Stars team that will participate in the all-star game on May 6th at McMaster University.
Over the course of his football career, Mahlique has experienced many football moments. There are too many experiences that the Eagles standout cannot narrow it down to one that is the highlight of his career.
“The few that come to mind is the first football game I ever played in, the first touchdown I ever scored and most recently, having the opportunity to play for and represent Team Ontario East at the Football Canada Cup this past summer,” adds Mahlique. “Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to make several more in the near future.”
Mahlique says all the coaches he’s been instructed by on the field have shaped him into the complete player he is today.
“My football coaches through all teams and clinics I have attended, have motivated me and influenced me to always work hard and to never sell myself short,” explains the Eagles wide receiver, who continually strives to improve his size, technique and skills as a player. “Through them, I have seen that working hard and making sacrifices early on, although it is the road less travelled, that in the end, hard work always pays off.”
However, the greatest inspiration and encouragement comes from friends and family.
“No matter what I have done, what goals I have set for myself, or what I strived to achieve, they have always been there for me, supporting me along the way,” says Mahlique. “Even in the worst of times, they have never left my side and were always there to support me.”
While Mahlique may not be sure of his future career aspirations, he says that he will be successful in achieving those goals through hard work and giving it his full effort.
Consequently from the game of football, the Eagles wide receiver has learned key skills which he continually uses in all aspects of life.
“I have learned the value of hard work, dedication, determination, commitment, teamwork, communication skills and the value of friendship,” explains Mahlique. “Most importantly, football has taught me a lot about myself; when I push myself, I can achieve anything I set my mind too.”
“I hope to apply all these skills to my education and career to ensure my success.”
