Newmarket Bucs’ Junior Varsity football comes into Week 2 looking for their first win of the season.
Although the Bucs lost to the Metro Toronto Wildcats 32-27 in Week 1, the team can take a lot of positives into their next matchup versus the 0-1 Niagara Spears.
First and foremost, their quarterback Harrison Mancuso threw for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns. He found his go-to guy in receiver Dylan John, who caught all three of the touchdowns and gained 206 yards altogether. Combine that with 92 yards gained on the ground and you’ve got an effective offence that can move the ball downfield.
The Bucs will have to limit their turnovers, however, as Mancuso threw for 3 interceptions that contributed to the loss. The Wildcats were effective in the air too, and didn’t throw an interception all day.
The Niagara Spears were hammered 35-7 in their opening game, which saw them find a rhythm in their passing game but not in their running game. The Spears gained only 23 yards on the ground in the loss.
The Bucs’ linebacker trio of Mitchell LaMantia, Mac Cawfield and Simon Gennaro combined for 21 tackles, 7 each, in Week 1, and so Head Coach Jim Mancuso will look to get them involved in the game against Niagara.
Kickoff is Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
