The Saskatoon Valkryies are still the top team in Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL), proving it once again with their third title victory in a row, this time over the Lethbridge Steel 27 to 13. They are the only winner of the WWCFL since it began in 2011.
Gusting winds and rain played a role in the game played in Regina at Mosaic Stadium, the home of the CFLs Saskatchewan Roughriders. All but seven of the points scored came when the teams had the wind at their back.
With the wind a their back the Valkryies totaled a lead of 14 to 0 on touchdowns from Julene Friesen (4-yard rush) and Marci Kiselyk (4-yard reception). The Steel managed a first half field goal (Carly Dyck) to make the score 14 to 3 at the break.
The third quarter was much the same as the second, with a Carly Dyck field goal being the only score.
Rienna Rueve kicked two field goals of her own for the Valkyries in the fourth quarter. The teams exchanged touchdowns in the quarter with a 20 yard Kiselyk reception (from Candace Bloomquist) for Saskatoon and Lethbridge QB Becky Hennigar scored on a 23-yard scamper with less than a minute to play.
