Team Ontario announces provincial under-18 roster.
After a long, tough deliberation process, Team Ontario has officially announced their provincial under-18 40 man roster. This squad will represent the province at the 2013 Football Canada Cup in Moncton, New Brunswick from July 15-21st, 2013.
Four of the players selected bring their wealth of experience from competing at the previous year’s tournament in London, Ontario. Receiver Marquis Richards (5’11, 169lbs) from Brampton and defensive back Jamaal Jones-Peters (5’7, 149lbs) from Brantford were members of Team Ontario West. Additionally, defensive linemen Trevaughn James (6’1, 285lbs) from Whitby and Avery Baker (6’1, 275 lbs) from Oshawa suited up for Team Ontario East in 2012.
Of the 40 players selected, nine of those players are ranked in CFC’s Top 100 – running back Khaliel James from Windsor (6’1, 190), defensive end Gurjant Singh from Mississauga (6’2, 230lbs), offensive lineman Andrew Pickett from Kitchener (6’5, 285 lbs), running back Raishaun Provo from Pickering (5’11, 205lbs), linebacker Rik Van Espen from LaSalle (6’1, 205), quarterback Nathaniel Hobbs from Mississauga (6’0, 195lbs), running back Mitchell Smiley from Sarnia (6’2, 185lbs) and defensive back Trevelle Wisdom from Toronto (5’11, 180lbs). These players all join fellow ranked teammate James on the Team Ontario roster.
Glen Mills, head coach of the provincial team said was impressed at the calibre of talent that came out to the tryout and selections camps in recent months.
“I think as a whole, the camps were very successful,” explained Mills. “It gave us a chance to see lots of talent throughout Ontario as well to see some of the younger players coming along as well.”
During the selection process, Mills said that the entire coaching staff was surprised by the level of competition the players brought in the hopes of securing their spot on the roster.
In particular, there were a few things the coaching staff was looking for in when deciding the roster. Overall, it was tough to make the final choices.
“The final six spots were very difficult,” reflected Mills. “We looked at over all athletic ability also look at if they could play special teams and another position.”
