OVFL: JV Cambridge Lions knock off undefeated Dolphins

The JV Cambridge Lions knocked off the Pickering Dolphins in commanding fashion with a final score of 59-0.

With the victory, the Lions cruise to 6-1 on the season with just one more game to play.

The Lions exploded as an offensive unit, from their very first possession. It was capped off with running back Alex Salytchev finding the end zone on a 76 yard run.

Overall, as a unit the Lions accounted for over 500 total yards of offense with 350 of them in the first half alone.

Through the air, the Lions unveiled something new; a quarterback tandem.

With quarterback Mitch Weiler getting the start he amassed 2 touchdowns through the air to go with his 75 percent completion percentage and 60 passing yards. Also, Mitch was able to find the end zone on the ground with another 2 touchdowns.

However, the newcomer under centre was Brayden Hill would not be out done, adding a touchdown to go with his 101 yards through the air. Also, he managed to haul in 2 touchdowns of his own as a receiver with his 55 yards in the air.

Overall, the Weiler-Hill tandem was effective, and everything went according to plan.

“It’s a great feeling to have it in your back pocket. Both knew what to expect and they were really cool about it,” noted Head Coach Gary Skalos.

In the air, leading receiver George Monaghan IV caught a touchdown to go with his team leading 78 yards receiving.

On the ground, the Lions leading rusher was Brandon Metz with 165 yards and a touchdown. While Alex Salytchev also finished over the century mark with 122 yards on the ground.

As a defense unit, the Lions had a strong performance. One of the most notable performances came from linebacker Brayden Ralph. He had 6 total tackles to go with a batted ball.

“He was everywhere all game set the tone for the game,” said Skalos.

Additionally, strong performances defensive backs Cody Jones and Ben Cross both snagging interceptions.

Also with Mitch Weiler returning to his familiar safety position, “Its really locked down,” commented Skalos on the defensive backfield.

On special teams, the Lions were effective, with kicker Nathan Mclean continuing his productivity with 477 yards of the kick off with an average of 53. While adding a 30 yard punt

“His punts and kick offs were great” noted Skalos.

Overall, the Lions had a great game but Gary Skalos knows there is always something to improve, as a team the Lions have been improving on reducing their turnovers throughout the season.

In this game, the Lions had 2 turnovers (one being a fumble the other an interception.)

“Were trying to get them down, and continue in that direction and kept trying to cause turnovers” says Skalos.

Looking to next week the Lions will be taking on the Hamilton Ironmen. This is gearing up to be a great way to end the regular season.

The Lions continue to practice hard for their new opponent and the .

“Rep things as much as possible and try not to make mistakes and get into that mindset now,” said Skalos.

Kick off is scheduled for July 20 at 8pm.

“We’re happy and now we have one regular season game and we get to have fun on a Saturday night at home,” noted Skalos.
