OFC: Toronto Jr. Argos get back on track

The Toronto JV Jr. Argonauts defeated the Peterborough Wolverines 20-18 last Sunday in Peterborough. It was a must win game for the Jr. Argos as their home field advantage for the playoffs was on the line.

Jr. Argo QB Treyion Charles displayed his excellent speed as he scored a touchdown off of a 25 yard run. The running game continued to work its magic as RB Isaiah Hibbert and Rayshawn Smith ran the ball in for touchdowns as well. The game seemed to be dominated by Toronto, but Peterborough refused to let the home crowd down.

The Wolverines came back strong in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points and bringing the score within two points late in the game. Luckily, the Jr. Argos were able to hold off the Wolverines and come out with a win. Assistant coach Jansen Schrubb commented on the comeback saying, “If you give resilient teams like Peterborough an inch they will take a yard, the key for us going forward will be our ability to play Argonaut football and compete for 60 minutes”.

All season Toronto has had penalty problems, and this game was no different. Undisciplined play almost brought the Jr. Argos another loss against Peterborough. At one point, an offensive drive in which the Jr. Argos gained 55 yards, turned into a -10 yard drive as penalties brought the ball back behind the line of scrimmage several times. Coach Schrubb believes that “the keys to success are discipline, dedication and hard work.  Our players know that and our coaches know that”.

Luckily, the defense led by linebackers Evan Shergold, Dante Dale and Alex Brennan secured an important victory for the Jr. Argos.

Toronto will be playing the Clarington Knights next Sunday for yet another away game. The eighth place Knights are coming off of a 46-0 loss this week and looking to redeem themselves against the Jr. Argos.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
