Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week (7): Cornish takes 2

TORONTO – Jon Cornish, Alonzo Lawrence and Chad Owens were named the Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week for Week 7 of the 2013 Canadian Football League season.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Saskatchewan Roughriders 27 @ Calgary Stampeders 42

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week for Week 7. Cornish ran for 175 yards on 16 carries and scored a career-high four touchdowns to help the Stampeders knock off the undefeated Roughriders, 42-27 at McMahon Stadium on Friday night.

The New Westminster, BC native was able to win the battle between the top rushers in the league against Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets. After Cornish’s big game this week, he has racked up 676 yards along the ground this season and leads the league with seven rushing touchdowns.

The single season rushing leader at Kansas University, scored touchdowns from 32, 14, 2, and 1 yard away. His longest rush of the game was 53 yards.

DB – Toronto Argonauts

Toronto Argonauts 38 @ Montreal Alouettes 13

Toronto Argonauts defensive back Alonzo Lawrence was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 7. Lawrence had a huge impact in his first CFL game by forcing a fumble, recovering two fumbles and recorded two tackles in the Argos 38-13 win in Montreal on Thursday night.

Lawrence, a former player at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, forced and recovered a fumble early in the first quarter, which led to an Argos touchdown and gave them an early 14-0 lead. His second recovery came late in the first quarter.

Toronto Argonauts 38 @ Montreal Alouettes 13

Toronto Argonauts kick returner Chad Owens was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 7. Owens returned an electrifying 118-yard missed field goal by Sean Whyte to give the Argos a 21-0 lead, en route to their fourth victory of the season.

Last year’s most outstanding player and former University of Hawaii player also returned two kickoffs for 31 yards and three punts for 40 yards in the game.

Owens finished with 247 all-purpose yards in the contest.
