Just like Varsity, these Hawkeyes had a short week as well after losing to Newmarket 34-14 on Saturday. They then had to turn around and play the following Thursday night. The Hawkeyes didn’t play overly bad on offence against the Bucs, as Garrett Arsenault has been very solid since taking over as starting QB. He completed nine of sixteen passed for 157 yards. However, he failed to throw a touchdown pass and he did cause a turnover. Logan Bodley wasn’t as strong as he’s been earlier this year running the ball but he made up for it in the passing game pulling in 6 passes for over 100 yards. Bodley has clearly been the offence’s strongest player all season racking up 661 yards in total offence; whether its running, catching or even throwing the ball, Bodley gets it done. Against Newmarket the Hawkeyes defence wasn’t able to get enough pressure on the opposing QB, which allowed the Bucs offense to freely move the ball up and down the field. When looking at most games, it has constantly been the defence struggling to keep up with other teams, which has a lot to do with this four game slide.
Moving on to last Thursday, the Hawkeyes knew they would be in tough against Markham but had no idea just how rough a game it would be. As perhaps can be expected on a short week the team, as a whole was completely outmatched and faltered early and often. The final score was 34-9 but it could have been much worse. This has been a very disappointing season for the JV Hawkeyes who last year at 4-4 made the playoffs. Almost all hopes of making another playoff run was lost Thursday as now the team at best will finish 4-4. This coming weekend the Hawkeyes must play an undefeated Kingston team who look poised for a championship run. The Hawks best bet is to rely heavily on Bodley and hope that the Grenadiers have massively underestimated their team. Prediction Hawkeyes 14 Grenadiers 40.
