The CFC #35 Westdale Warriors traveled to Westmount with great confidence after their welcome victory against Orchard Park winning 43-13. Their heads were high with a smirk on their faces, but veteran players Sam Malavolta and Joey Ricottone were not taking this game lightly, they were serious, motivated, focused and ready to lead the warriors into battle. With motivational words from outside linebacker Cody Ricottone the Warriors were set and prepared for anything Westmount could throw at them.
The opening kick-off was sent deep by Matt Oliver and the game was on. Westmount began to march the ball but the Westdale defence was able to hold their ground. With the game moving on, it was a slow but rough 1st quarter. There were only 2 points on the board scored by rouge off the punt into Westdale’s end zone, holding the Warrior’s back 2-0.
Bent but not broken, Sam Malavolta and his offence came together and started moving the sticks. With some key runs by Owen Angus-Yamata (picture) and Jacob Wolfenden, Westdale was into Wildcat territory. Continuing to march down field, Sam Malavolta finally hit Joey Ricottone in the end zone for six points. Adding on the extra point kicked by Matt Oliver the warriors were up by five, but they couldn’t stop there.
The Wildcats with the ball and good field position is a dangerous combination for this Westdale defence. But with two clutch interceptions by Travis Gelly and Matt Oliver and some huge hits by Andrew Pacheco and Cody Ricottone, they were able to contain the Westmount Quarterbacks dangerous arm and their deceptive motion offence. But Westdale was not finished yet as late in the second half Malavolta connected with Ricottone in the end zone for a second time diminishing the Wildcats chances of a comeback further. It was a close and nerve racking game but Westdale was just able to pull away with the victory. But not everybody was happy about this win as there were several mistakes and unneeded penalties that almost pushed this game out of reach for the Warriors. The Westdale crew is really going to have to buckle up and be ready for next week’s task, as they face Churchill on Westdale home turf.
