OTTAWA (CIS) – McGill quarterback Pierre-Luc Dussault, Saint Mary’s defensive lineman Rob Jubenville and Guelph returner Alex Charette are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 29, 2013.
Dussault, a first-year pre-medicine student from Quebec City, was honoured on offence after he led the Redmen (3-2) to a spectacular 53-52 overtime win over cross-town rival Concordia in his first career start at the university level, last Saturday. With his team trailing by 20 points (32-12) early in the third quarter, the 6-foot, 200-pound freshman orchestrated a memorable comeback and ended up completing 29 of 46 passes for three touchdowns and 538 yards, the second best single-game tally in RSEQ history and the 12th best on the CIS all-time list. Dussault also had a major and 62 yards on the ground as McGill racked up a school-record 757 yards of net offence.
Acadia running back Zack Skibin, Toronto quarterback Simon Nassar and Calgary running back Mercer Timmis were also up for the award.
Jubenville, a fifth-year business administration student from Oshawa, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to his four quarterback sacks in a 25-13 win over StFX, Friday night. The 6-foot-2, 257-pound senior finished the contest with 5.5 tackles and also forced a fumble as the Huskies (2-2) held the visiting X-Men to 163 yards of total offence. Jubenville leads CIS this season with eight sacks in only four games and is the all-time AUS leader with 27 over his career.
Sherbrooke lineman Jean-Christophe Gagnon, Queen’s defensive back Justin Baronaitis and Manitoba defensive back Connor Lesperance were also nominated.
Charette, a third-year human kinetics student from St. Catharines, Ont., was the choice on special teams thanks to his electrifying 125-yard touchdown off a missed field goal in a 41-19 victory over Waterloo, a result which allowed the Gryphons (5-0) to remain undefeated in league play and climb to fourth place in the national Top 10, their best ranking since 1997. With Guelph leading 21-6 late in the first half, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver all but put the game away with his spectacular return. He finished the match with 169 return yards on four touches and 211 all-purpose yards.
Kickers Chase Kodejs of Saint Mary’s, Keegan Treloar of Concordia and Johnny Mark of Calgary were the other nominees.
