Bishop’s quarterback Jordan Heather, linebacker Antoine Pruneau of the Montréal Carabins and receiver and returner Guillaume Rioux of the Laval Rouge et Or are the RSEQ university football players of the week for the period ending October 6th, 2013.

Jordan Heather (History), Bishop’s Gaiters’ quarterback, is the offensive player of the week in the RSEQ. The 5th year player from Oromocto, led the Gaiters in their 30-29 victory over the McGill Redmen on Friday night. After pacing the Gaiters to a 22-5 halftime lead, the Gaiters found themselves trailing by 7 points late in the game. Heather led Bishop’s on a 12 play, 88-yard drive capped off by he, himself punching in a 3-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with 438 passing yards and three touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing). The Gaiters all-time leading passer now has his troops at 4-2 heading into the Thanksgiving bye week.

Antoine Pruneau (Physical Education), linebacker of the Carabins from Université de Montréal, wins the defensive player of the week award in the RSEQ. Pruneau, who had been playing at the Sam linebacker position for the majority of the season, offered a shutdown performance at the cornerback position in a 30-24 win against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. With the Carabins’ starting weak side cornerback out of the line-up, Pruneau was asked to cover the opponents’ best receiver all game. The Carabins were down 7-5 in the first quarter when Pruneau intercepted a pass that lead to its team’s first touchdown. He also tipped two passes and collected 4,5 tackles, 4 of them solo.

Guillaume Rioux (MP alimentation et nutrition) receiver and returner of the Rouge et Or from Université Laval wins the special teams player of the week award in the RSEQ. Rioux had a solid overall performance scoring both on special teams and on offense. He returned a punt for a 94 yard touchdown in the first half and finished the game with a combined total of 171 yards. Rioux also caught four passes for 50 yard and a touchdown.

Timmis, Ba, Wandler named Canada West football Players of the Week
EDMONTON – For the second consecutive week, University of Calgary Dinos running back Mercer Timmis has been selected Canada West football offensive Player of the Week, while Kareem Ba (UBC, defence) and Taylor Wandler (Regina, special teams) have also won weekly awards.

Quite simply, Mercer Timmis continues to dominate Calgary’s offence as their No. 1 running back.
On Friday night in Saskatchewan, the second-year business student had a game-high 17 carries for a total of 178 yards, averaging 10.1 on the night. His longest carry was an incredible 80-yard run in the fourth quarter to solidify Calgary’s sixth win of the season. The touchdown was his 14th rushing touchdown of the season, giving him sole possession of the school single-season record. It was also his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game this season.
The Dinos have a bye week before hosting the Regina Rams in their second match-up of the season. The Dinos defeated the Rams 34-27 the last time the team went head-to-head on Sept. 6.

Kareem Ba was a man possessed Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg as he led the UBC Thunderbirds defence with 2.5 sacks, 6 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 2 forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in a 28-24 victory over the #10 Manitoba Bisons. With the victory UBC improved to 3-0 on the road.
The fourth-year Kinesiology student from White Rock, BC was a constant thorn in Manitoba quarterback Jordan Yantz’s side, harassing him all day long and limiting the Bisons pivot to just 194 yards passing. The Thunderbirds defensive line combined for five quarterback sacks, including 2.5 from Ba. He also helped to limit one of the country’s best running backs, Anthony Coombs, to just 87 yards rushing.
Ba is now tied for second in the conference with 4 sacks on the season and is first in forced fumbles with 3.

Taylor Wandler was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts on Saturday in the University of Regina Rams’ 25-20 victory over Alberta.
Wandler’s three field goals included a season-long 40-yarder early in the fourth quarter which gave the Rams their first lead of the game. He also hit a 36-yard field goal in the first and was good from 21 yards out midway through the second.
Wandler also punted seven times for an average of 41.4 yards per punt, including a long of 52 yards. He also had a pair of punts go out-of-bounds inside Alberta’s own 10-yard line, forcing the Golden Bears to start drives deep in their own territory on two occasions.

Fracas, Ahlstedt and Adeleke take home OUA weekly football honours

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 6, 2013.
OFFENCE: James Fracas, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Quarterback
Quarterback James Fracas (Waterloo, Ont.) was a force for Wilfrid Laurier in their near-upset of the No. 5 Queen’s Gaels on Saturday. The second-year business major threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns – both career highs – as the Golden Hawks lost 40-34 in overtime. Fracas was instrumental in getting the game to overtime as he drove Laurier down field and tied the score with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Greg Nyhof with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
DEFENCE: Keldyn Ahlstedt, McMaster Marauders, Defensive Back
Keldyn Ahlstedt (Whitby, Ont.) was ever-present on Saturday in McMaster’s 66-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. The second-year defensive back nabbed three interceptions and tallied four and a half tackles on the afternoon, as the Marauder defence limited the Warriors to 172 total yards and forced eight turnovers.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Tunde Adeleke, Carleton Ravens, Returner
Tunde Adeleke (Ottawa) tied a CIS special teams’ record in the second quarter of the 45th Panda Game between the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon. Adeleke returned a missed Ottawa field goal attempt 129 yards for a Carleton touchdown; the longest possible return under current CIS football rules. The economics major also picked up an interception and had three solo tackles.

Quarterback Tivon Cook of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport Football Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 6, 2013.
Cook, a 5-foot-10, second-year arts student from Scarborough, Ont., threw three touchdown passes in the X-Men’s 30-9 Homecoming victory over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday.
He completed 26-of-36 pass attempts for 274 yards with no interceptions.

Defensive Player of the Week

Height and weight: 6’2”, 220lbs
Linebacker Sanmi Adereti of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport Football Defensive Player of the Week.
A third-year arts student in his fifth year of eligibility hailing from Brampton, Ont., Adereti had nine tackles (seven solo and four assisted) in StFX’s 30-9 Homecoming victory over the Mount Allison Mounties.
His nine tackles included four tackles for a loss of 18 yards, two of which were sacks, for a combined loss of 15 yards.
Adereti is currently seventh overall in AUS tackles with 30.5 on the season and third in sacks with 5.5.

Defensive back Michael Bohan of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Football Special Teams Player of the Week.
Bohan, a second-year chemistry student from Sackville, N.B., had 10 punt returns for 210 yards, including a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Mounties’ 30-9 loss to the StFX X-Men on Saturday. His 210 yards are a Mount Allison school record and are the second most punt return yards by and individual in a single game in AUS history. This is just 10 yards shy of the all-time conference record of 220 yards set by Acadia’s Scott Crichton in 1972.
His stats also included four kickoff returns for 78 yards for an average of 19.5 yards per return.
In addition to his impressive stats on special teams, Bohan also had five assisted tackles on defence.
