(Russell, On) A big week just ended for accomplished and sought after Russell football player Stéphane Tanguay. The 6ft5, 290 lbs offensive lineman giant was named last
wednesday october 9th, 2013 to the Ontario Football Conference allstar team after his second season playing with the Ottawa Sooners of the CJFL. To top that off last Friday, Tanguay signed on as a CIS student athlete letter of intent with the Carleton University Ravens under head coach Steve Sumarah.
“I started playing 4 years ago with the Russell Renegades minor football team and I have not stopped since” comments Tanguay. Playing two or three season a year, with the help and assistance of many coaches locally and abroad, Tanguay has improved his talents and skills to become one of the most sought after offensive linemen in Canada. Tanguay has been ranked nationally in the top 25 by Canadafootballchat.com. He was one of 10 Canadians invited to the US Army AllAmerican combine in San Antonio, Texas last January.
“We are very excited to bring Stéphane on board our program at Carleton. From the start, we have made a commitment to seek only the best individuals at each position and Stéphane will fit right in with the rest of the team starting in 2014.” coach Sumarah added. In addition to playing with his high school team at ESC Embrun, Tanguay has learned the ropes of the game by playing among many teams such as Russell Renegades, Gloucester South Raiders of the NCAFA league, Cumberland Panthers of the OVFL league and Ottawa Sooners of the CJFL.
During that time he has earned many accolades and awards.”But what really impressed me about Tanguay is his work ethic, his commitment to his team and his desire to learn.” added Cumberland Panthers head coach Scott Westlake.
The next challenge for Tanguay is trying out for Team Canada to play in the Junior World Tournament next July. “I think it would be a great honour and privilege to represent our country playing a game I love.” Tanguay concluded.Canada enters the third IFAF U19 World Championship as the defending gold medalist. The U19 World Championship, held every two years, is a tournament of nations playing American style football. The tournament will be held in Dubai in July 2014.
