The Hurricanes won a berth in the final game in a close semi-final victory over the Dalhousie Tigers last Saturday. Although the Hurricanes had been leading for most of the game, Dalhousie pulled ahead in the final minutes of play. An electrifying 51-yard run with just 45 seconds left in the game by running back Chucky Ortiz saved the day for the Hurricanes, and kept their dream of winning back-to-back championships alive.
During the regular season, the Hurricanes were 0-2 against the Red Bombers, losing 28-21 at home and 25-22 on the road. As indicated by the close scores, the two teams are evenly matched.
Head Coach Mark MacDougall said the team knows it will be in for a hard-fought battle.
“We expect a tight game, one that could very well be decided by mistakes such as turnovers or penalties. We have been preaching all week that we need to eliminate both of those factors and play our best football of the year,” he said.
For veteran quarterback Nick Hunsley the game represents another big challenge in his career as the Hurricanes signal caller.
“Our program has come a long way from a new franchise three years ago to defending champs playing in the title game for the second year in a row. This team knows how to win – the veterans just have to show that again on the field on Saturday night,” he said.
Should the Hurricanes win, they would be the first team in AFL history to claim consecutive championships.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
