John Barsby head coach Rob Stevenson made a critical decision in the dying moments of Saturday’s championship game against Carson Graham that could have labeled him a goat and caused him much second-guessing over the off-season.
Instead, he’ll be hailed as a hero for his gusty call.
With the Bulldogs trailing 20-13 late in the fourth quarter, John Barsby QB Brody Taylor engineered a drive that resulted in a Cole Virtanen touchdown to pull his team within one point. Instead of playing it safe and going for the single, Stevenson called for the all-or-nothing play going for a two-point conversion that was successful after Kyle Vollet took a pitch and found the end zone.
Carson Graham led the entire game up until that point and still had a chance to engineer a late comeback with receiver A.J. Blackwell helping the Eagles get down to the 20-yard line setting up an opportunity for a game-winning field goal but the clock ran down on Carson Graham before they had a chance to kick the ball giving John Barsby the 21-20 victory and their second championship in the last four years.
The Bulldogs played the game without their star running back Brandon Parker who suffered a knee injury in their semi-final victory over Mission.
