Seventh annual Maritime High School Combine set to take place in Feburary.
It’s back once again!
The seventh annual Maritime High School Combine has returned. It will take place on Saturday February 8th, 2013.
While it will be a much improved event from previous years, there is significant change – the venue of the event.
“This is the seventh annual Maritime High School Football Combine and every year it gets bigger and better,” commented Maritime High School Combine Coordinator Jon Dyer. “Unfortunately, last year’s combine had to be cancelled at the last minute due to a severe winter storm.”
“We are really excited about this year in particular because it is our first time at the new East Hants bubble dome. This facility allows us to operate in a much bigger space and provide the coaches and athletes with an optimal playing field to showcase their talent.”
This combine will be open to grade 10, 11 and 12 players from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Dyer stressed the importance of why players from the region should attend this event.
“The combine offers high school kids a very unique opportunity to showcase their talent to some of the top CIS programs in the country,” explained the Maritime High School Combine Coordinator. “For the graduating seniors, it’s a chance to get one last look as the recruiting season closes in.”
“But especially for the grade 10’s and 11’s, it is a chance to get noticed and identified early in the recruiting process so that those relationships with CIS programs start right away. Recruiting across the country starts very early in an athlete’s career and players need to recognize that. There is not an event in Atlantic Canada better than this that will get you noticed in front of so many great programs.”
Some may be asking, what exactly is a combine?
“The Maritime High School Football combine is an annual event that brings together the top high school football players from across the Maritimes,” described Dyer. “They go through a standard testing process in the morning in events like the 40 yard sprint, vertical jump, bench press, broad jump, and the shuttle test.”
“This gives coaches the opportunity to measure and compare the raw athleticism of the athletes. In addition, the afternoon consists of on field positional drills and one on one’s which gives the athletes a chance to showcase their skills and standout in certain areas.”
Registration will begin at the event at 11:00am with testing starting at 12:00pm. At 2:00pm, the positional drills will occur and the event will conclude with 1 on 1’s (slated to commence at 2:30pm).
Some notable CIS players have participated in this Combine including offensive lineman Kadeem Adams (Western), defensive tackle Jacob Leblanc (Mount Allison), receiver/return specialist Adre Fraser (Guelph), quarterback Jesse Mills (Carleton), defensive lineman Quinn Everett (Mount Allison) and quarterback Ben Rossong (Saint Mary’s).
“The Maritime High School Football Combine has showcased so many great athletes over the years that it’s tough to highlight only a few,” added Dyer. “I can almost guarantee that if a school has a kid from the Maritimes on their squad, they participated in this combine at some point.”
Representatives from 17 CIS and CEGEP schools have attended the event. Some of the universities/institutions include Saint Mary’s, Mount Allison, Acadia, St. Francis Xavier, McMaster, Queen’s, Guelph, Carleton, McGill, Toronto, Waterloo, Calgary and Champlain-Lennoxville.
“The Maritime high schools are producing a number of great CIS stars in the past few years that are having huge impacts on CIS programs,” expressed Dyer.
This year’s registration fee is $25.00. It is recommended that players register as soon as possible. In 2012, 125 players participated at the Maritime High School Combine. The online registration link can be found here : http://tinyurl.com/
