OVFL & OFC Week 2 (Varsity) Recap: Offensive explosions, defending champions keep rolling

Week 2 is complete in both the Ontario Varsity Football Conference (OVFL) and the Ontario Football Conference (OFC)

In the OVFL, the Ottawa Myers Riders’ offensive explosion catapulted the team to victory, which moved them to 2-0 on the season.  Other winners in Week 2 action were Ajax-Pickering Dolphins, York Simcoe Bucs, Etobicoke Eagles, Kingston Grenadiers, Scarborough Thunder, Essex Ravens, London Jr  Mustangs and Niagara Spears.

Not only did the Myers Riders remain undefeated after this past weekend’s games, so are the Dolphins, Spears, Mustangs and Thunder.

As for the OFC, defending league champions Hamilton Hurricanes are now 2-0 after a win this past weekend.  Other teams who were victorious in Week 2 action include Forest City Thunderbirds, Sudbury Gladiators, Niagara Storm, Guelph Bears, Burlington Stampeders, Toronto Jr. Argos and North Halton Crimson Tide.

Pickering Dolphins Logo

AJAX-PICKERING DOLPHINS 29, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 20:

At Esther Shriner Stadium, Raishaun Provo rushed for 118 yards on 16 carries and tallied a major as the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins defeated the Metro Toronto Wildcats 29-20.

Alonzo Addae also scored a touchdown on a 52 yard punt return and was also successful on four conversion attempts.  Nevell Provo amassed 52 yards on three receptions for the Dolphins.

York Simcoe Bucs

YORK SIMCOE BUCS 21, CORNWALL WILDCATS 14:

At St. Maximillian Kolbe High School, Kyle Lasota ran into the end zone twice and had 53 rushing yards on 13 carries as the York Simcoe Bucs got past the Cornwall Wildcats 21-14.

Dylan John also tallied a major while he racked up 81 rushing yards on 16 carries. Marc Liegghio added a PAT.

On defense, Luke Griese registered two solo and five assisted tackles.  Luke Ciraco added seven assisted and a solo tackle for the Bucs.

ETOBICOKE EAGLES 50, HAMILTON IRONMEN 23:

At Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School, Neko Hamilton scored three touchdowns and rushed for 132 yards on 15 carries as the Etobicoke Eagles coasted to a 50-23 victory over the Hamilton Ironmen.

Jesse Amankwaa also tallied a major and rushed for 67 yards on 13 carries.  Matthew Donato had two passing touchdowns while Frederico Barcos added three PAT’s.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 25, CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 12:

At LCVI, Dylan Fisher completed 18 passes on 30 attempts for 276 passing yards and two passing touchdowns as the Kingston Grenadiers were victorious over the Cumberland Panthers 25-12.

Nathan Thompson scored a touchdown and amassed 139 yards on seven receptions (an average of 19.9 yards per reception). Konner Burtenshaw rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries and tallied a major for the Grenadiers.

Michael Bashall added a 28 yard field goal and three PAT’s in the victory.

Dylan Bell registered six solo and two assisted tackles for the Grenadiers.  Cameron Hebert had three solo and two assisted tackles.  He also recorded two solo sacks.

As for the Panthers, Justin Poitras completed 16 passes in 29 attempts for 206 passing yards and a touchdown.  Kurleigh Gittens Jr. racked up 121 yards on seven receptions (average of 17.3 yards per reception).

Jonathan Meyer added a 19 yard field goal and a PAT.

On defense, Khadeem Pierre registered seven solo and an assisted tackle in the loss.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 60, MARKHAM RAIDERS 7:

At Minto Field, it was an offensive explosion for the Ottawa Myers Riders as the defending OVFL Champions crushed the Markham Raiders 60-7.

Pivot Matthew Duffy led the offensive outburst for the Myers Riders as he completed 14 passes in 16 attempts for 408 passing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Jaegar Prot tallied four majors and amassed 268 yards on seven receptions (an average of 38.3 yards per reception).  Jahdel Ferron rushed into the end zone three times and had 75 yards on nine carries for the victors. Connor Ayre was successful on eight conversion attempts.

Brad Herbst led the Myers Riders defense with three solo and three assisted tackles as well as recording a sack.

As for the Raiders, Matt Prucha completed 18 passes in 35 attempts for 202 passing yards and a passing touchdown. Andrew Douglas had 59 receiving yards on six receptions. Dale Wright added a PAT.

SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 34, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 13:

At Oshawa Civic Stadium, Brett Watson completed 16 passes in 33 attempts for 345 passing yards and four passing touchdowns as the Scarborough Thunder cruised to the 34-13 victory over the Oshawa Hawkeyes.

Shomari Murdock-Reid had 161 yards on four receptions (average of 40.2 yards per reception) and tallied a major for the victories. Additionally, Daynar Facey racked up 116 yards on four receptions, scored a touchdown and was successful on four conversion attempts.

On defense, Amir Zeisler registered five solo and one assisted tackle as well as recorded a sack.  Dylan Laird added five solo and three assisted tackles.  Moreover, he recorded one solo and one assisted sack.  Nathaniel Anderson had four solo and two assisted sacks along with two solo sacks.

As for the Hawkeyes, Braeden Vavassori tallied a major and had 67 yards on three receptions (average of 22.3 yards per reception).  Pivot Jack Hazlett had nine completions in 15 attempts for 104 passing yards and a passing touchdown.

Drue Moore led the Hawkeyes defensive with seven solo and five assisted tackles as well as recording a solo sack. Jordan Gillespie registered four solo and an assisted tackle in the loss.

Eli Fera

ESSEX RAVENS 35, SSM SABRECATS 13:

At Windsor University, Elijah Fera rushed for 202 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Essex Ravens defeated the SSM Sabrecats 35-13.

Matteo Del Brocco also tallied a major and had 81 yards on eight receptions for the Ravens.  Pivot Anthony Bontorin completed 12 passes in 18 attempts for 134 passing yards and two passing touchdowns for the Ravens. Hugh Paulin added five PAT’s.

At halftime, the Ravens enjoyed a 28-0 lead.

Due to injuries, the Sabrecats only dressed 31 players in the game.  Dion Bouliane caught an interception and ran into the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown. He also led the defensive unit with six solo tackles and a batted ball.  David Toppan also tallied a major and racked up 74 yards on five receptions.

Nathan Elgie, who came in relief of Justin Elwgren, completed 13 passes in 24 attempts for 106 passing yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Ray Duplin registered four solo and five assisted tackles.  He also recovered a fumble and recorded a sack. Nick Nicoletta registered five solo and four assisted tackles.  Jeff Horbatuk recovered a fumble and added five solo and three assisted tackles in the loss.

LDN JR Mustangs

LONDON JR. MUSTANGS 22, HALTON COWBOYS 10:

At Jean Vanier Catholic School, Mackenzie Ferguson caught three interceptions – one which he returned for a touchdown, registered four solo and two assisted tackles as the London Jr Mustangs cruised to a 22-10 win over the Halton Cowboys.

Danny Mundt rushed for 121 yards on 11 carries while Ben Kelly was was successful on three conversion attempts.

Brandon Murray had four solo and five assisted tackles for the Mustangs.

NIAGARA SPEARS 45, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 7:

At Loyola Catholic Secondary School, the Niagara Spears cruised to a 45-7 win over the Mississauga Warriors.

Nate Hobbs completed 10 passes in 30 attempts for 143 passing yards and a touchdown in the loss.  Dante Brown added a PAT for the Warriors.  Jarid Liberman had 55 yards on three receptions (average of 18.3 yards per reception).

Ryan Bartlett led the Warriors defense with seven solo and four assisted tackles.

Forest City

FOREST CITY THUNDERBIRDS 42, CHATHAM-KENT COUGARS 0:

At Westminster Secondary School, the Forest City Thunderbirds earned a shutout victory over the Chatham-Kent Cougars, 42-0.

For the Cougars, Carter Wood registered seven tackles while Erich Demars added six tackles.  Trevor Niven had a fumble recovery and caught an interception.   Moreover, Jesse Stewart caught an interception while both Nathan Macintyre and Jacob Brush had fumble recoveries.

Josh Collins recorded two quarterback sacks in the loss.

Huronia Stallions Week 2 2014

BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS 40, HURONIA STALLIONS 15:

The Huronia Stallions Varsity Team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 50-14 defeat at the hands of the Burlington Stampeders.  Burlington took it to the Stallions from the opening whistle with the outcome never in doubt.  The Stallions could not respond to the Stampeder onslaught suffering dropped balls on offence and missed tackles on defence.  Matt Howe and Nick Stadnyk accounted for the two Stallions touchdowns.
