Montreal – The Montreal Alouettes have awarded $34,250 in bursaries to 26 of Quebec’s most promising football players in celebration of the 10th edition of their bursary program with the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence.
The bursary ceremony was presented by RDS, and supports student-athletes who excel in a recognized football program in a high school, CEGEP, or university – in addition to standing out on the field, in the classroom, in the community, or due to their perseverance.
Alouettes’ President and CEO Mark Weightman and RDS Marketing & Communications Senior Director Stéphane Boulay presented student-athletes with their bursaries during a ceremony prior to the team’s game against the Edmonton Eskimos. Weightman stated: “We are proud to help continue to develop minor football with the goal of keeping Quebec’s best young athletes in the province to both study and pursue their football aspirations. It has always been important for the Alouettes to support amateur football and this bursary program has been an important initiative for our organization, as we not only encourage our youth to excel on the field, but also in the classroom. ”
Among the 26 awardees several bursary types were included: four Academic Excellence Bursaries that reward exceptional educational results; three Leadership Bursaries that highlight community involvement; two Perseverance Bursaries that acknowledge significant academic improvement; sixteen Academic and Athletic Support Bursaries that recognize the successful combination of football and academics, and finally, one Recruitment Bursary that supports a student-athlete who has completed CEGEP in Quebec and goes on to pursue an academic and athletic career in a Quebec university.
The program is co-directed by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence and Football Quebec, in partnership with the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec. Foundation PresidentMr. Claude Chagnon, Football Quebec President Mr. Jean M. Poirier, and RSEQ PresidentMr. Gustave Roël had this to say about the Alouettes’ involvement in the program: “This program encourages and inspires young football players to seek out and cultivate a balance between performance on the football field, simultaneous preparation for their lives after sport, community involvement in terms of offering themselves as role models for the generation behind them, and the perserverence to achieve these noble and challenging goals.”
The ceremony to celebrate bursary award winners was presented by RDS, who are have been a Prestige-level communications partner of the Foundation for numerous years. RDS broadcasts select video clips of bursary recipients and is the official broadcaster of the 29th Quebec University Sports Awards Gala set to take place November 25th, 2014 at the Sheraton Hotel Laval.
