The St. Mary’s Knights have won their sixth Bowl Game since 2000 today after defeating the Sir Winston Churchill C&VI Trojans, 47-27 in the Northern Bowl. The game was largely dominated by the St. Mary’s Knights as their running and passing game outplayed the Trojan defense.
St. Mary’s quarterback Justin Elwgren led the Knights up the field with the help of running back Dylan Hebert and receiver no. 85 Brain Fronzi. Elwgren completed 9 out of 12 of his passes for 203 yards. Brain Fronzi had four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Although the passing game was well played, it was the work of running back Dylan Hebert that led the Knights to a victory with 21 rushes for 177 yards and three touchdowns. The first half ended with the Knights in front 26-0.
The second half was a different story as the Churchill Trojans came out with a lot of energy. Trojan quarterback Jarred White was able to rally the offense and put together a few drives into the Knight’s red zone. He finished the game completing 13 out of 27 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his receptions went to no. 1 Devyn Chenier who caught three passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end no. 3 Justin Fui not only played a great game, but also added to the Trojan total by scoring two touchdowns of his own.
Despite a valiant effort, the Trojans were unable to stop St. Mary’s offense in the fourth quarter. From the game’s opening drive, St. Mary’s was able to control the tempo of the game. St. Mary’s head coach Martin Smith is very proud of his team, not only for their work today, but for the effort put forth all season. Although St. Mary’s has been to a bowl game eight times now, this game was particularly special. “They did not have an undefeated season like some of my past teams” says Smith, “but we worked really, really hard to get here.”
