This weekend the newly branded Manitoba Major Junior Football League kicks off its forty-second season with three games.  All three games will be played Saturday, August 8.

The first game will be played in Brandon at 3:00 p.m. The always tough Westman Wolverines will be taking on the once dominant Eastside Eagles. In the last three seasons the Eagles have compiled a 19-3-1 regular season record while Brandon was shut out of the playoffs last year. But this year the Eagles will have to find success without their All Star quarterback, Kelly Sansregret who has aged out. That leaves the Eagles with very large shoes to fill. The Wolverines under new coach Brady Dane may have a few surprises in store for the boys from Eastside.  The game will be played at Neelin High School, 1020 Brandon Avenue, Brandon.

At 7:00 p.m. the MMJFL welcomes back the Transcona Nationals to the competition. It has been four years since Transcona has had their neighbourhood Majors team. On Saturday night they will jump back on the firing line as they host the Greendell Falcons. Both these teams will be building on the success of their Midget teams so the game should be very equal and entertaining. Transcona Field, 875 McMeans Avenue.

At 8:00 p.m., the Marquis match up, as the Fort Garry Lions play host to the St. Vital Mustangs. In a replay of last years Championship game the Mustangs will be trying to dispel the belief that the Lions have built an unbeatable dynasty. With Fort Garry going undefeated last season, on their way to winning consecutive titles, the smell of ‘Three-peat’ is in the air. It will be up to the Mustangs to stop the Lions and quash anymore of this dynasty talk.  Fort Garry Field, 1377 Clarence Avenue.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
