CIS: Laval edges defending champ Carabins on last play (stats)

Rookie kicker Dominic Lévesque hit a field goal with no time left to propel the Rouge et Or to a 12-9 win against the Montreal Carabins Saturday evening at TELUS-Université Laval Stadium before 14,419 spectators gathered for the opening game of the 2015 season.

“I told the players that they must be very pleased with the event, but I think we made mistakes discipline, including a change and some punishments. It is very early in the season and we still have a lot of good football to play, ” said Laval head coach Glen Constantin.

“It is certain that Montreal had a very good team, very hard to contain offensively,” he added.

“This is sick! I do not know what else to say. We did our job, we accomplished what we wanted to do tonight, and I’m really happy, it feels good, “said kicker Dominic Lévesque.

“My job is not finished, I still have a lot to prove. This is just a part, there remain several others. I need to do my job. It takes and have fun at the same time, but I need help guys,” added the rookie kicker.

Both teams seeded 1 and 2 in the country could not have been more equal: first downs 24 for Laval, against 21 for the Carabins. Montreal had accumulated 415 yards, including 322 through the air, while Laval obtained in 396, including 301 by the pass.

“There was not much that separated us from victory,” said coach Danny Maciocia. “Both teams managed to make games and dominated the line of scrimmage at times, but they managed to make a game more than us tonight. Now, there is still a lot of games and everything is possible.”

Carabins rookie receiver Louis-Mathieu Normandin had a big first game catching 11 balls for 169 yards. “It was a good baptism of fire, he said. It was a very good game and that’s what we expected. We have had ups and downs. ”
