OUA Recaps: Gee-Gees stun Gaels, Carleton wins big [stats]

The Ottawa Gee-Gees used a huge second quarter to score a 41-17 win over the visiting Queen’s Gaels in front of an appreciative crowd on opening day at Gee-Gees Field. Ottawa scored 34 points in the second quarter to take control of the game.

The Gee-Gees offence came out blazing obtaining four straight first downs on its first possession, but Ottawa was unable to score once in the red zone. The first quarter was a showcase for both defences in which the Gaels opened up the scoring on a field goal to lead 3-0 after one quarter.  Gee-Gees head coach Jamie Barresi seemed pleased with the efforts put on by his defence. “I think our defence played fairly well. I was very impressed by what they did. Queen’s is a very good running team.“ Gaels running back Jesse Andrews still obtained 112 yards on the ground but Barresi felt that his defence managed to “at times somewhat nullify” the Gaels’ rushing attack.

“The game plan today was to win and plan B was to execute plan A,” said defensive lineman Rashid Timbilla, who had two of Ottawa’s five sacks in the game. The floodgates opened up for the Grey and Garnet’s offence in the second quarter.

The Gee-Gees scored their first points of the season on a highlight reel touchdown catch by receiver Tristan Bailey.  Following a strip sack of Gaels quarterback, Nate Hobbs and a Lewis Ward field goal, Ottawa’s Wendel once again found the end zone, this time using his legs to score the touchdown. Wendel then found receiver Mitchell Baines twice for touchdowns including a terrific 42-yard bomb.  The two touchdowns were part of a 4-touchdown day for Wendel who threw for 3 and ran for one.

Baines, starting his fourth season,  finished with 62 yards and 2 touchdowns while his teammate Ian Stewart also had a solid game obtaining 113 yards on 7 receptions. However, the offensive star belonged to running back Bryce Vieira who had a massive game. Vieira ran for 110 yards and had another 93 receiving. Though he didn’t find the end zone the Gee-Gee made several highlight reel plays and was named Offensive Player of the game for the Garnet and Grey.

Vieira attributed his success to the offensive line, a group with who he now has complete faith in. “I remember at the beginning of training camp, I was hesitant because there was a lot of youth coming into the line but they did a great job. They made some great holes,” said the running back.

Despite the fact his team finished with 553 offensive yards, 5 sacks, 2 fumble recovery and an interception,  Barresi is still looking for more out of his players. “ We still have a long way to go. We’re not running the way I want them to run and our tempo has to be much better.”

“Offensively I thought the execution was good for different periods. I’m going to be upset about our goalline execution I know I’m not too happy about that. That’s two scores that got away from us,” shared Barresi. Wendel shared similar thoughts as his coach but thought the lack of offence in short yardage situation was more self-inflicted than anything else. “I think it was our own fault. We have to make throws and get all the blocks down.”

After the initial field goal, Queen’s was held off the scoreboard until the 3:22 mark in the third quarter when Curtis Carmichael caught a nine yard pass for a major. Hobbs would add a rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The Gee-Gees will now travel to Hamilton for a rematch against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year, the McMaster Marauders.

OTTAWA (September 6, 2015) – The Queen’s Gaels (1-1) were in Ottawa on Sunday to take on the Gee-Gees (1-0) in week two of the OUA football season. The Gaels started out with a 3-0 lead but a 34 point second quarter fueled the Gee-Gees to a 41-17 win over Queen’s in week two of the OUA season.

Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) led the Gaels offensively with 15 rushes for 112 yards while adding one reception for 20 yards. Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) rushed for a touchdown and hit Curtis Carmichael (Scarborough, Ont.) for another while Nelkas Kwemo(Montreal) finished with 12.5 tackles to lead all defenders which included 12 solo tackles which is the second most by a Gael in a single game in team history. The Gee-Gees saw big days from quarterback Derek Wendel who finished with 384 yards and three touchdowns and scrambling in for another while Mitchell Baines had two touchdown receptions.

GAME FLOW
In the first quarter Queen’s found themselves in a tough spot defensively as Ottawa had a third and short chance from the Gaels four on their opening drive. The defence stood tall and shut down the Gee-Gees to keep the game scoreless.

After a missed field goal from Ottawa Nicholas Fraser-Greene returned a punt 93-yards to the Ottawa 26. That then set up a 18-yard field goal for Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) to put the Gaels ahead 3-0. Turnovers began to be a problem for Queen’s as Andrews fumbled after a 25-yard rush deep into Gee-Gees territory but Ottawa was able to recover and take over on offence.

In the second quarter the Gee-Gees offence took command of the game. First Wendel hit Tristan Bailey for a 13-yard score to take a 7-3 lead. Ottawa followed up with a field goal, a Wendel five yard rushing score, a safety conceded by the Gaels, two Baines touchdown receptions and a single for 34 points of offence leaving the Gaels in a deep hole heading into the second half.

In the third quarter the Gaels started to pick up the pace on offence. Hobbs threw a deep pass to Matteo Del Brocco(Leamington, Ont.) for a 36-yard reception taking the Gaels to the Gee-Gees nine yard line. From there Hobbs hit Carmichael for the Gaels first major of the day.

After the Gee-Gees tacked on another four points via a field goal and a rouge, Queen’s struck again as Hobbs scrambled past Gee-Gee tacklers to find the endzone. Hobbs rushed six times on the day picking up 42 yards in total on the ground.

The Gee-Gees managed the clock from there on out and secured themselves a 41-17 win.

(Ottawa, ON) – The Carleton Ravens (1-1) football team put in a first-rate performance in its home opener on Sunday, dominating the Waterloo Warriors (0-2) on both sides of the football en route to a 57-0 win. The Ravens exploded for nearly 500 yards of offence, while defensively limiting the visitors from Waterloo to less than 200 yards.

“I thought we did some good things,” said Ravens head coach Steve Sumarah. “We moved the ball really well on offence, and defensively we managed to get stops when we needed them.”

Carleton’s dual-threat attack shredded Waterloo both on the ground and in the air. Ravens running back Jahvari Bennett (Mississauga, ON) picked up three rushing touchdowns before being lifted from the game at halftime, while quarterback Jesse Mills (Halifax, NS) completed 80% of his attempts for 226 passing yards and a touchdown.

“This win gives us a lot of momentum going into a big game against Windsor,” said Mills, who found Nate Behar for a 36-yard touchdown reception less than two minutes into the game to open the scoring. “The offensive line was great, they gave me a lot of time to throw, and they opened holes for running backs.”

Carleton jumped out to an 11-0 lead inside the first five minutes and never looked back, as a trio of Bennett rush TDs and a Mike Domagala field goal opened the Ravens lead up to 35-0 by halftime.

Bennett was given a rest after the break, as Christian Battistelli (Whitefish, ON) and Marley Patterson (Toronto, ON) split Carleton’s running duties in the second half. The two combined for 136 rushing yards, and Battistelli ran in a 6-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to push Carleton to the half-century mark in scoring.

“In a game like that, you just try to take small victories on each play,” explained Coach Sumarah post-game. “I thought that we had a lot of those smaller victories throughout the game, which is good.

Return man Tunde Adeleke (Ottawa, ON) electrified the crowd at MNP Park throughout the afternoon, averaging twenty yards per return and bringing the house down with an 81-yard punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

“We played four quarters,” said Ravens star wide receiver Nate Behar (London, ON), who was one of a number of Carleton players to leave the one-sided game for precautionary reasons due to injury. “In the second half we came out, two-and-outed them, and drove the field – it’s really good to see that we’ve got that ability to play for four quarters.”

Leon Cenerini (La Salle, MB) and Guillaume Caron (Saint-Joseph-du-Lac, QC) led the way for Carleton on the defensive side of the ball, with Cenerini registering a game-high nine tackles and Caron racking up a pair of sacks and 3.5 tackle-for-losses.

The Ravens will now have five days to prepare for their Week 3 opponent, the Windsor Lancers (0-1), before traveling south in pursuit of their second victory of the OUA season.
