Receiver Brian Jones of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 20, 2015.

A third-year science student in his fourth year of eligibility from Enfield, N.S., Jones scored the winning touchdown Saturday versus the Mount Allison Mounties with a 53-yard reception with 1:05 remaining in the game.

This gave the Axemen the 25-24 victory, snapping the Mounties’ 12-game regular season win streak.

The reigning AUS MVP, Jones had nine receptions for 121 yards in the win.

Linebacker Daniel Tshiamala of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.

A third-year arts student from Kinshasa, Congo, Tshiamala led all StFX defenders in tackles in StFX’s 48-13 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

Tshiamala posted 6.5 total tackles (four solo and five assisted), including 2.5 tackles for a loss of 11 total yards.

Hometown: Nepean, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BA Geography
Height and weight: 6’2”, 215lbs

Punter Kyle McLean of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.

A fourth-year geography student in his fifth year of eligibility from Nepean, Ont., McLean had 11 punts for 400 total yards (36.4 yard average). The longest of these was for 59 yards and three were downed inside the 20.

McLean, who is also a wide receiver, added two receptions for 16 yards in the Mounties close 25-24 loss to the Acadia Axemen Saturday in Sackville, N.B.

Montreal, September 21, 2015 – The RSEQ university football season is at full swing and student-athletes Louis-Mathieu Normandin (Carabins, University of Montreal),Arto Khatchikian (Stingers, Concordia University) and Antony Dufour (Rouge et Or, Laval University) have stood out for their performance on the field in week 3.

Offensive Student-Athlete Louis-Mathieu Normandin Receiver Team: Carabins University: University of Montreal Hometown: Montreal Height: 6’1’’ Weight: 200 lbs Former team: Cégep du Vieux Montréal Score: 32-13 victory over Université de Sherbrooke’s Vert & Or Highlights: Rookie receiver Louis-Mathieu Normandin had an exceptional game against Université de Sherbrooke’s Vert & Or. He scored three touchdowns and gained 125 yards in five receptions. Right from the start, the HEC Montréal student-athlete set the tone by catching a 38-yard touchdown pass within the first five minutes of the game. Then, in the first minute of the third quarter, the 20-year-old recovered a fumble from one of his teammates in the endzone. After that, he went on to seal the win by completing a 58-yard pass for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Defensive Student-Athlete Arto Khatchikian Linebacker Team: Stingers University: Concordia University Hometown: Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec Height: 6’ Weight: 220 lbs Former team: St. Leonard Cougars Score: 33-21 victory over the McGill University Redmen Highlights: Captain Arto Khatchikian led the Concordia Stingers in tackling with seven solo tackles and two assists, including a quarterback sack and a tackle for loss. The student-athlete also collected an interception in the second quarter, which he returned 11 yards.

Special Teams Student Athlete Antony Dufour Kick returner Team: Rouge et Or University: Laval University Hometown: Quebec City, Quebec Height: 6’0’’ Weight: 190 lbs Former team: Cégep Limoilou Score: 44-2 victory over sur the Bishop’s University’s Gaiters Highlights: Rouge et Or player Antony Dufour set the tone of the game when he returned a 57-yard punt for a touchdown with under four minutes left on the second quarter clock. This feat contributed to the Quebec City native keeping an excellent 17.8-yard punting average. The student-athlete also returned a kickoff 28 yards to open the second half.

OUA:

FINCH, BIEWALD, DOMAGALA NAMED OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 21, 2015.

OFFENCE: Will Finch (Burlington, ON) – 4^th yr. – Western

Will Finch (Burlington, ON) was at it again in Week 4, leading his third-ranked Western Mustangs to a 48-25 win over the Queen’s Gaels this past weekend.

Finch finished with 454 yards while completing 32 of 42 passes, the second best performance of his career next to a 547-yard effort against York to close out the 2013 regular season.

The 6’3, 215 lbs quarterback also threw for two touchdowns in the win, improving Western’s record to a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Finch spread the ball around with ruthless efficiency, connecting with eight different receivers, while two Mustangs receivers — George Johnson (140) and Harry McMaster (109) — posted 100+ yard games.

DEFENCE: John Biewald (Ottawa, Ont.) – 4^th yr. – Western

John Biewald (Ottawa, Ont.) led the way for the Mustangs D in another stellar performance by Western, topping Queens 48-25.

Biewald contributed three sacks and six tackles for the Mustangs, while three of those tackles were for a loss, resulting in -17 yards for Queens.

The fourth-year Social Science major is having a career season so far, totalling 13.5 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble this year. Biewald is part of a Mustang defence that has allowed a league-best 12.8 points a game.

The 6’4, 225 defensive lineman exploded in last year’s playoffs, leading the team with 10 tackles against their semi-final loss to Guelph.

Biewald and the Mustangs will host Carleton this Saturday during Western’s Homecoming. Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Michael Domagala (St. Catharines, Ont.) – 3^rd yr. – Carleton

Michael Domagala (St. Catharines, Ont.) saved the day for the Carleton Ravens as they outlasted the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 19-15 during the Ravens Homecoming weekend. Domagala scored 13 of Carleton’s 19 points in the victory over the Varsity Blues, including a season-long field goal from 41 yards.

The third-year Criminology and Criminal Justice student-athlete also nailed a field goal in the final minute of the game to seal the deal for the Ravens by giving them a four-point lead.

Domagala also tacked on 340 yards in punting, averaging 34 yards per boot, and added three kickoffs averaging 64.3 yards.

The Ravens improve to 3-1 on the year, but head to take on the dominant Western Mustangs this weekend as the ‘Stangs host their Homecoming game. Kickoff is at 1pm.

Football Players of the Week: Buckley, Mark earn honours after historic win

The No. 1-ranked Calgary Dinos were big winners on the field Week 3 of the Canada West season, and were rewarded Monday for their 80-18 win over the Alberta Golden Bears with a pair of conference player of the week awards.

Quarterback Andrew Buckley and kicker Johnny Mark are the Week 3 offensive and special teams players of the week respectively, while Saskatchewan’s Dane Bishop is the defensive player of the week.

OFFENCE:

Andrew Buckley, Calgary Dinos, Quarterback

Reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner Andrew Buckley displayed the form that won him Canadian university football’s highest honour a year ago in a record-breaking offensive performance Week 3, as the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos put up a dominant 80-18 win over Alberta Thursday night.

Buckley completed 27 of 33 passes for 452 yards and three touchdowns – all in just over three quarters of work.

After losing the services of running back Mercer Timmis to injury after the first quarter, Buckley took on added responsibility for the offence and behind a strong offensive line, continually found open receivers. The Calgary native helped the Dinos engineer touchdowns on their first five possessions on a night Calgary broke their own Canada West single game scoring record, which they had previously set with a 78-54 win over Manitoba back in 2012.

Buckley and the Dinos (3-0) put up an unbelievable 975 yards of total offence in the game, with Buckley, who also rushed for 29 yards, accounting for nearly 500 yards on his own.

Calgary now heads on the road Saturday to face the Regina Rams (0-3). That game can be seen live on local Shaw TV, Shaw HD, Shaw Direct 299, on Access Communications’ channel 7/70 and online at canadawest.tv starting at 4 p.m. Saskatchewan time.

DEFENCE:

Dane Bishop, Saskatchewan Huskies, Linebacker
6-0, 218, 5th year, Sherwood Park, AB

Fifth-year University of Saskatchewan linebacker Dane Bishop was a force for the Huskies on defence in a pivotal 33-18 win over the Regina Rams Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

The Sherwood Park, AB native was all over the field, recording a game-high nine tackles. The senior linebacker added a sack, along with forcing and recovering a fumble.

With the Rams gaining steam on their first possession of the second half, Bishop swung momentum back to Saskatchewan, closing in on a Rams receiver, knocking the ball loose before emerging with the ball from the ensuing scramble.

The Huskies (1-2) travel to Vancouver, B.C. this Friday to take on the UBC Thunderbirds (2-1). The game is available live at canadawest.tv, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. Pacific.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Johnny Mark, Calgary Dinos, Kicker

6-8, 185, 5th year, Peterborough, ON 

With his first convert of the Dinos’ 80-18 win over Alberta last Thursday night, Calgary kicker Johnny Mark became the all-time leading scorer in CIS history, breaking a tie with former Western Mustang and current Winnipeg Blue Bomber Lirim Hajrullahu’s mark of 422 points.

When the night was over, Mark had scored 20 points: 10 PATs, three field goals, and a punt single. That sets the new national scoring mark at 442 points – a record he will continue to improve on with five games remaining in the season.

Through the first three weeks of his senior year, Mark is 10-11 in field goals, leads the nation with a 45.7-yard punting average, and has a Canada West-best 51 points scored on the season.
