CIS late games: Dinos, Laval win in blow outs [stats]

Running back Michael Webber (pictured) rushed for over 130 yards in his first career start, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Rams were buried 72-8 by No. 1 Calgary on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.
The Rams were within a touchdown after one quarter, but Calgary scored majors on four consecutive possessions in the second to pull away for good. The visiting Dinos led 41-0 at the half and 55-8 after three quarters on the way to their 64-point victory.

Calgary (4-0) had a fine outing from quarterback Andrew Buckley, who completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts for 478 yards and four touchdowns. Rashaun Simonise hauled in two of Buckley’s four touchdown passes, opening the scoring with a 37-yard major in the first and also scoring on a 42-yard catch-and-run in the second. Simonise finished with four catches for a game-high 106 yards.

William Maxwell needed only two plays to lead all players in all-purpose yardage. He had a 104-yard kickoff return for a touchdown late in the third, and closed the scoring with a 73-yard catch on a ball delivered by backup quarterback Jimmy Underdahl. Maxwell finished with 222 all-purpose yards.

Matt Carson and Doctor Cassama both notched a sack and a pass breakup for the Dinos, with Cassama also recording a team-high nine tackles (8 solo, 2 assisted). Boston Rowe also had a sack, while Robert Woodson and Michael Schmidt added pass knockdowns and Cory Robinson had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the same play in the fourth quarter.

Making his first career start for the Rams with Atlee Simon injured, Webber finished with 18 rushes for 135 yards and scored the team’s lone major of the game with a 21-yard rumble in the third.

Mason Rossler had an unassisted sack and combined with Michael Stefanovic on another, while Eric Wicijowski added another sack for the Rams defence. Joey DwyerKorey Greene, and Polis Koko all had pass breakups.

REGINA – Another week, another huge offensive outburst for the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos as they exploded for 34 points in the second quarter en route to a 72-8 win over the Regina Rams Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

After a relatively tentative start, the offence scored on its second possession – a 37-yard Andrew Buckley toss to Rashaun Simonise – then added four more majors before halftime to go up 41-0 at the break – and the visitors never looked back from there as the offence kept rolling while the defence frustrated the white-clad Rams all night long.

With the win, the Dinos find themselves with a two-game cushion above the traffic jam behind them in the conference standings. With Calgary at 4-0 and Regina now at 0-4, the other four teams are all locked at 2-2 at the midway point of the Canada West season.

“We certainly have a lot of talent,” Buckley told Access TV in a post-game interview. “Our effort will determine how far we go this year, and we just need to improve every week. We’re very lucky to have so much depth, but we have to be willing to push ourselves and stay focused.”

In another stunning offensive display, the Dinos racked up 732 yards while allowing just 283 as the defence played its best game of the season. The Rams were limited to less than 150 yards through the air and not much more than that on the ground. Doctor Cassama led the way with 9.5 tackles along with a sack, with Connor McGough and Cyril Iwanegbe chipping in with five and four tackles, respectively.

It was 44-0 midway through the third when the Rams got outstanding field position on the Calgary 31-yard line after a punt return. Two plays later, Regina broke the goose egg on the scoreboard when Michael Webber found the corner and ran it in from 21 yards out to finally give the home side some life.

That momentum, however, lasted all of 14 seconds as William Maxwell returned the ensuing kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown. Maxwell would score again late in the game, this time on a 73-yard pass-and-run from backup quarterback Jimmy Underdahl.

Underdahl, who had a one-yard TD plunge of his own, took over the reins at quarterback in the fourth quarter following one of the best performances of Buckley’s career. The reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner completed 21 of 29 passes for 478 yards and four touchdowns: in addition to the 37-yarder in the first quarter, he connected with Simonise again from 42 yards out, with Austen Hartley from 38, and with Mac Sarro from 22. It was the fifth-highest single game passing total in school history, and the best since his own 512-yard performance in September 2013 against Manitoba – and the 21 completions moved him into second spot on the Dinos’ all-time list in the category with 435.

Missing their starting tailback Mercer Timmis, the Dinos did lean more heavily on the passing game – but the run game wasn’t forgotten as fifth-year running back Bryce Harper got the chance to start. Harper carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and one particularly impressive touchdown, spinning off defenders and dancing 17 yards into the end zone. He also hauled in four catches for 41 yards.

Simonise was Calgary’s top receiver with 106 yards on his four catches, while Sarro added a 71-yard bomb to his 22-yard TD while Brendon Thera-Plamondon went for 86 yards on his lone reception of the night. Hartley was the most popular target, hauling in six passes for 84 yards.

Kicker Johnny Mark accounted for 24 of the Dinos’ 72 points, hitting all four of his field goal tries – including a career-long 48-yarder – and moving his CIS career scoring record up to 466 points with four games to go. He also made it up to 79 field goals, putting him just five away from the national record in that category.

Calgary (4-0) will look to head into the Thanksgiving bye undefeated when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-2) next Saturday afternoon during the Dinos ‘Play in Pink’ series, supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.

Université Laval, September 26, 2015 – Laval  easily disposed of the X-Men from St. Francis Xavier 64-0 Saturday night at TELUS-Université Laval Stadium.

The Rouge et Or (4-0) dominated 578-124 in terms of total yards, to the delight of 12,932 spectators gathered this evening. For their part, the X-Men, who were visiting Quebec for the first time, had to wait until their final offensive sequence of the first half before before getting a first down. They totaled only 10 throughout the game.

“For two weeks we focus on the process, not the result. We saw that the performance was very good on the ground in the first half and our back ups also did very well the rest of the match, “analyzed the driver Laval Glen Constantin.

“I think it was really clear from the first offensive thrust. You could see that the team was very focused iand defensively we have done a good job. ”

From the first quarter, the Laval intentions were clear. The Rouge et Or put up 17 points with 17-yard field goal from Dominic Lévesque and TDs from quarterback Marc-Antoine Langevin (one-yard run) and RB Christopher Amoah (32-yard run).

Laval added 23 points in the second quarter on three other majors and a safety touch: Maxime Boutin twice (two and four yards) and Amoah (one yard) crossed the goal line and gave a comfortable 40-0 at the half.

Amoah completed his hat trick with another major on a six-yard run in the second half.
