BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 5th, 2015.
OFFENCE: Alex Malone (Toronto, Ont) – 2nd yr. – Toronto
Alex Malone (Toronto, Ont.) was an absolute workhorse for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Fridaynight, as they topped their rivals, the York Lions in the annual Red & Blue Bowl by a score of 40-3.
The second-year Kinesiology student-athlete carried the ball an astounding 31 times collecting 315 yards on the ground while adding one touchdown. His performance broke the Blues previous record for rushing yards in a game and also ranks him 12th on the all-time CIS list for single-game rushing yards.
The 5’7″ 185 lbs running back totaled an incredible 10 yards per carry, which was highlighted by a 59 yard run in the second quarter, and a three yard smash into the end zone early in the fourth quarter.
The win keeps Toronto in the playoff conversation with a record of 2-3, as they host Western on a short weekThursday night. The game starts at 7pm.
DEFENCE: Luke McQuilkin (Burlington, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Queen’s
Luke McQuilkin (Burlington, Ont.) was a crucial part of the Gaels massive 23-15 upset over the previously undefeated Guelph Gryphons this weekend.
The 6’0″ 233 lbs linebacker had five total tackles and one interception for 15 yards. The interception came in spectacular fashion, as the Gryphons were marching down the field looking for endzone.
The fourth-year Commerce student-athlete picked off Guelph’s James Roberts in the endzone to halt the Gryphons drive, and then returned the pick 15 yards, taking it out of the endzone and setting up the Gaels offence on the five-yard line.
McQuilkin made another goal-line stop in the third-quarter, taking down Guelph running back Johnny Augustine for a one-yard loss on second and goal, forcing Guelph to go for it on third down. The Gryphons were unable to connect on the pass, turning the ball over for a second time in the Gaels red zone.
Queen’s will look to take this momentum and carry it into their next game as they head to Toronto to take on York. Kick-off is slated for Saturday Oct. 17th at 1pm.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Michael Domagala (Ottawa, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Carleton
Michael Domagala (Ottawa, Ont.) takes home OUA Special Teams Player of the Week honours after helping the Ravens to a 48-45 double-overtime victory over their cross-town rivals, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, in the annual Panda Game matchup.

Football Players of the Week: Mark makes more history, Loffler earns second award
Calgary Dinos kicker Johnny Mark’s rewriting of the CIS record book continued this weekend, as the fifth-year special teams star pushed himself into a tie with former McMaster kicker Tyler Crapigna for the most field goals (84) all-time in CIS history.
Mark is the Week 5 Canada West special teams player of the week, after going 5-for-6 on field goals Saturday afternoon against Saskatchewan in Calgary’s 59-19 victory.
Taking home offensive honours this week is Regina Rams receiver Davin Johnston, who became the first player in the conference this season to rack up 200 receiving yards in a game. Johnston also becomes the first Regina Ram to claim a conference weekly award in 2015.
Rounding out this week’s winners is UBC safety Taylor Loffler, who is the defensive player of the week for the second time this season, after claiming the award for the first time following Week 2.
OFFENCE – Davin Johnston
Regina Rams
Receiver
6-0, 190, 3rd-year
Regina, SK
Third-year receiver Davin Johnston got his first start since Week 1 on Friday and made the most of it, exploding for 13 receptions and 203 receiving yards for Regina in their 34-19 setback to Manitoba on Friday.
The Regina native’s total of 13 receptions is tied for second on the U of R’s single-game list, matching the 13 registered by current offensive coordinator Mark McConkey in a 2010 game. The single-game Rams receptions leader is Chad Goldie, whose school record of 15 also stands as the Canada West single-game record.
With over 200 yards receiving in a single game, Johnston’s performance is just the sixth time in school history a player has racked up over 200 receiving yards in a game. Johnston joins an exclusive club that also includes Chris Bauman, Neal Hughes, Addison Richards, and Jordan Sisco.
After the conference bye this weekend, Johnston and the Rams return to the field for a home rematch with the Bisons on October 17.
DEFENCE – Taylor Loffler
UBC Thunderbirds
Safety
6-3, 220, 2nd-year
Kelowna, BC
Loffler led an impressive showing from the Thunderbirds defence in UBC’s strong 39-21 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, racking up seven solo tackles, a key forced fumble in the first quarter. The Boise State transfer also recorded a key tackle for loss in the fourth quarter, as Alberta was trying desperately to make a comeback.
The player of the week win marks the second time this season Loffler has earned the award, after the T-Birds’ 27-20 win over the Regina Rams in Week 2 of the regular season.
Up next for the T-Birds is a rematch with Alberta October 17 in Vancouver, following the conference’s Thanksgiving weekend bye.
SPECIAL TEAMS – Johnny Mark
Calgary Dinos
Kicker
6-8, 185, 5th-year
Peterborough, ON
Fifth-year kicker Johnny Mark continues to rewrite the CIS record book in his final season with the University of Calgary Dinos.
Saturday against Saskatchewan, Mark kicked five field goals and accounted for 23 of the Dinos’ 59 points on the afternoon as they improved to 5-0.
The most accurate kicker in the nation with more than five field goal attempts, Mark has been good on 19 of 21 field goal tries so far this year and thanks to five more on Saturday, now sits tied with Tyler Crapigna (McMaster, 2010-14) for the all-time CIS record for career field goals with 84. His next field goal will add that record to his collection that already includes the national all-time scoring record, which now sits at 489 points with three games remaining to add to that total.
Mark will get his chance to add to his record book résumé beginning Friday, Oct. 16 when the Dinos visit Saskatchewan at Griffiths Stadium.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
