Montreal  – The Montreal Carabins ground attack amassed over 200 yards for the first time this season as they earned a 22-16 win over Laval Rouge et Or before a noisy crowd of 5100 spectators at CEPSUM Saturday afternoon.
The Carabins defence also did their job and stopped the Rouge et Or attack late in the game.
The Carabins had a good start to the game and got opportunities to put points on the board quickly in the first quarter. Running back Sean Thomas Erlington delivered a remarkable performance. He scored the first touchdown on a spectacular 42-yard run.
Erlington completed his working day with gains of 182 yards on 16 carries, in addition to catch four passes for 28 yards.
“I feel really good after a game like that, but that would not mean anything if we did not win the game,” he said. “The offensive line did a very good job.”
“We wanted to play to win and not to wait until the opponent scores.”
“The success of the ground game was by far my greatest satisfaction today,” commented Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “It’s a great team win.”
“We will continue working to improve, but we can really build on that.”
On their next drive, the Carabins found ways to advance the ball. Quarterback Gabriel Cousineau got past two tacklers before finding Regis Cibasu for a 25 yard gain. A field goal attempt followed, but was unsuccessful and produced a single.
In the second quarter, the Carabins offence came up again in the end zone, but had to settle for a 12-yard field goal by David Deschamps.
After a  Rouge et Or touchdown on a 28 yard pass from Hugo Richard to Anthony Dufour to close the gap, François Hamel gave the ball to the Carabins through an interception. After a long drive, Cousineau completed it with a one yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown.
The Rouge et Or’s Dominique Lévesque completed the first half with a successful 40 yard field goal to put the Carabins up 18-10 at halftime.
Laval tries to mount a comeback
The Carabins defence was able to be opportunistic in the fourth quarter to stop the Rouge et Or from mounting a late comeback come. First, on third and fourth, Alex Cromer-Émond managed to pressure Richard in full flight to end the threat.
Late in the game with only 1:48 to play, the Rouge et Or came within 14 yards of the end zone. After two incomplete passes, Frederic Chagnon managed to cast off the ball on the last attempt to try to win the game.
“It’s important to be opportunistic and I think our defense has been today,” said Jonathan Boissonneault-Glaou who registered six tackles and two sacks. “The team managed to play well in all three facets of the game.”
Game ball to Coach Fabrice Raymond
As usual, Maciocia gathered the team on the ground at the end of the game for their few words. He had a surprise for them by offering a rare game ball to one of their own – in this case, Defensive Backs Coach Fabrice Raymond. Maciocia told the players that Raymond had experienced a very trying week since he and his wife had lost the baby they were expecting for the month of January.
“It’s not my style of give a game ball because for me we win or lose as a team,” said Maciocia, visibly emotional at the time. Â “However, when a member of our family is going through difficult times, we must make him feel our support.”
“We offered Fabrice to stay home a few days this week, but he wanted to do his job and remained focused on the task at hand despite the situation. It was the least I could do for his contribution.”
Raymond was treated to a collective hug from all players after receiving his ball.
Few second-half points
The Carabins defence did not allow a single point in the third quarter. David Deschamps added a 25-yard field goal after halftime to increase the Carabins lead 21-10.
In the fourth quarter, the Carabins conceded a safety and the Rouge et Or then closed the gap thanks to a 20 yard field goal by Dominique Lévesque.
Both quarterbacks provided a good duel. Gabriel Cousineau completed 21 of 29 passes for gains of 251 yards. On the other side, Hugo Richard gained 276 yards by completing 25 of his 42 pass attempts. They were both intercepted once.
The Carabins (4-2) will play their next match next Saturday at 1:00pm. They will visit the Gaiters (1-5) at Coulter Field at Bishop’s University.
