RSEQ RECAPS: 14′ CFC100 Henderson leads Carabins to convincing victory [stats]

Montreal  – The Montreal Carabins completely dominated the Bishop’s Gaiters on Saturday afternoon in Lennoxville, en route to a a decisive 52-3 victory.

Ahead 35-0 at the half, the Carabin mainly used their ground game in the second half to amass 220 yards, completing a second consecutive game over 200 rushing yards.

“The players had a good attitude all week and we had approached this game as a business trip,” mentioned the Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “Everyone contributed to this convincing victory.”

The Carabins spent most of the first half in Gaiters territory, including taking advantage of three turnovers. They quickly built a lead as they scored three touchdowns in the first quarter.

The Carabins threatened on their first possession, but the 41 yard field goal from Louis Philippe Simoneau hit the post. However, the Carabins tool the ball into the next drive as Junior Luke recovered the ball following a bad attempt by the Gaiters. Gabriel Cousineau opened the scoring a few minutes later with a one-yard quarterback sneak.

A minute later, Jean-Sébastien Bélisle intercepted a pass from Mathieu Demers before reaching the end zone for a 19 yard score and doubled the team’s lead. In the final moments of the first quarter, Sean Thomas Erlington completed another Carabins offensive series in the end zone, this time on a six-yard run.

“Our offence did a good job and it’s always nice for our defence to contribute by putting points on the board,” said Bélisle. “Our mandate was to slow our opponents.”

“We should not neglect the work of our defensive unit,”  continued Maciocia. “We often talk about making turnovers and positioning our attack.

|It is mission accomplished.”

Olivier Daoust-Pichette intercepted Demers only 50 seconds into the second quarter. #CFC100 CLASS 2014 Hugo Henderson came in at quarterback at that time and wasted no time in connecting with his former Vieux-Montreal Spartiates Louis-Mathieu Normandin on 13-yard touchdown. That was Henderson’s first touchdown pass in the CIS.

“It was a thrill for me that my first touchdown pass was successful with Louis-Mathieu,” said Henderson. “It gave me confidence in my first game.”

“It was good to get into the game and it feels good to contribute to the victory.”

Henderson did it again with another 13 yard touchdown, this time to Regis Cibasu before heading to the locker room.

During an uneventful second half, Simoneau added 39 and 31 yard field goals. The Carabibns added four points with two safeties conceded by the Gaiters. The only points from the Gaiters came via Vincent Dubé’s 26 yard field goal at end of the third quarter when the score was already 40-0.

The Carabins completed their work day with total gains of 376 yards against 158 for the Gaiters. During three quarters, Hugo Henderson completed 11 of his 15 passes for 100 yards and two touchdown passes.

“I’m happy with my performance,” added Henderson. “I stayed calm and I felt like I made good decisions.”

“I learned a lot by training with a complete player such as Gabriel Cousineau, but it’s never the same to make things happen in game situations.”

“Hugo did a great job,” Maciocia said. “He has worked very hard since joining us last year and was able to demonstrate his potential and the impact he can have on our team.”

Normandin amassed 94 yards on just three receptions. The Carabins defence pulled out all the stops in the game, including three interceptions and two sacks. The most productive was the rookie defensive back Jean-Sébastien Bélisle with four tackles, including a sack and an interception returned for a touchdown.

The Carabins will conclude their regular season next Saturday, October 31, when they host the Concordia Stingers.
