Abankwah, Morris and Blight named week 5 AUS football players of the week

October 9, 2012 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Saint Mary’s running back Melvin Abankwah along with Acadia linebacker Drew Morris and Acadia place kicker Thomas Blight have been named the Week 5 AUS football players of the week.

Running back Melvin Abankwah of the Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 7th, 2012.
Abankwah, a 5-foot-9 second-year player from Etobicoke, Ont., racked up 326 all-purpose yards including 208 rushing yards and a touchdown in Friday night’s 43-7 home win over the Mount Allison Mounties.
Melvin’s TD run came on a 53-yard scamper early in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 30-0 lead. He also added 22 yards on three receptions, 53 yards on two punt returns and 43 yards on five kickoff returns.
Abankwah’s 208 yards on the ground are a career-high and is the highest single-game total in the conference this season. The Huskies lead the AUS conference in rushing, averaging 177.6 yards per game.

Acadia Axemen linebacker Drew Morris is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 7th, 2012.
Morris, a second-year student from Ottawa, Ont., recorded 5.5 tackles this past weekend, including 1.0 tackle for a loss and added an impressive 106-yard interception return for a touchdown as the No. 10-ranked Axemen defeated the StFX X-Men 41-14 to improve to 4-1.
The 106-yard return came early in the first quarter on StFX’s opening drive after the X-Men marched the ball 83 yards on six plays down to the Acadia four-yard line to open the game. Morris then grabbed an errant pass from StFX QB Clay Masikewich and took the interception the length of the field to give the Axemen an early 7-0 lead.
The return, his second of the season, is the longest this season in the AUS conference and is the longest interception return since October 26, 2007 when Mount Allison’s Bradley Daye recorded a 109-yard return.
Morris currently leads the Axemen defence with 31.5 tackles through five weeks of play and is ranked third in tackles in the conference.

Place kicker Thomas Blight of the CIS No. 10-ranked Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week.
Blight, a second-year student-athlete from Moncton, N.B., scored 13 points this past weekend as the Axemen improved to 4-1 with a 41-14 road win over the StFX X-Men in Antigonish, N.S.
Thomas was good on 3-of-4 field attempts and added three PAT’s and a rouge in the victory. His successful field goals came from 40, 17 and 36 yards respectively. He also averaged 48.6 yards on seven kickoffs.
