NFC: Transit, Steelers win divisional finals, set up showdown for NFC Championship title tomorrow
The Montreal Transit and Sault Ste Marie Steelers will battle it out tomorrow for the 60th annual Northern Football Conference Championship in Ste. Saint Marie for the right to hoist the Plante Memorial Trophy.
The Transit advanced to the Northern Football Conference finals after shutting out the Durham 44-0 in the East Division Final. Jourdain Alexis scored two touchdowns in the victory – a 47 yard touchdown in the first quarter and 10 yard major in the third quarter. Alexis has 169 rushing yards on 10 carries
Kicker William Dion was successful on six conversion attempts
At halftime, the Transit enjoyed a 23-0 lead courtesy of touchdown by Alexis and a 100 yard kick return from Nathan Taylor. Additionally, Slyde St.Charles caught an interception and returned it for a 45 yard touchdown.
In the second half, Taylor would score his second major of the game. This time, he caught an interception and returned it for a 75 yard score. Other than Alexis’ score, the Transit’s Patrick Okpalugo would round out the scoring with a 20 yard dash into the end zone in the fourth quarter of the game.
Ryan Perry led the Transit defense as he registered three tackles in the game.
Meanwhile, the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers punched their ticket to the finals after cruising by the Tri-City Outlaws 51-21 in the West Division Final. Running back Josh Gauthier led the way for the Steelers as he scored three touchdowns in the second half (30, 90 and 45 yards) in addition to amassing 346 rushing yards in 26 carries in the game.
Matt Leask also played a huge role in the victory as he was successful on six conversion attempts and had two rouges for the Steelers. Moreover, he had six completions in seven attempts and one touchdown.
Mike Hope, Jesse Hill and James Castellani also scored majors for the Steelers who led 23-7 at halftime over the Outlaws.
Brandon Lewis led the Steelers defense as he registered 10 tackles in the game.
The Steelers will host the NFC Championship Game against the Transit. Kickoff is 7:00pm.
