CFC25 Small School Rankings WEEK 3: We’ve got a new number one program from Quebec

Did someone order a new number one special? Barring catastrophic failure in the top ten, it looks like we’ll have a new CFC25 National Champion in 2023.

Alberta

  • Down goes Holy Trinity Academy! It’s time for a new number one program atop the list after Chinook shocked the province with a thrilling 21-20 victory over Holy Trinity Academy. The Coyotes from Lethbridge are the ultimate underdog story with zero appearances in the Tier II Provincial Playdowns since their inception in 2010. There’s been a buzz around the program all year, and Chinook has lived up to all expectations and already exceeded them at this point. Now that they’ve proven they can beat the best in Tier II, it’ll be about keeping nerves at bay each week as they march towards Provincial glory. As for the Knights, they are still on track to defend their Tier II title, and will be out for revenge in November if they get the opportunity to suit up against Chinook when it matters most.

Quebec

  • We’d now like to introduce you to the new number one ranked program – the Dable-Viau Aigles d’Or. They popped on the CFC25 Small School scene with their jump to Juvenile DII, and have turned into a juggernaut straight away with a 14-2 record since joining the league, including their Bol d’Or victory over College Laval last year. They were a great team in 2022, but they have turned into an elite team this season that nobody has been able to touch outscoring their first four opponents 194-47. Right now it looks like their only real challenger might be Saint-Joseph, who are the only other undefeated team in DII, but with the programs playing in separate conferences we will have to wait until the playoffs for a potential showdown.
  • We have a newcomer from Quebec on the list this week after Roger-Comtois improved their record to 3-1 with a big 25-9 victory over Triolet. The only blemish on their resume so far was a tight 20-14 loss to Deux-Montagnes in the season opener, but they’ve now ripped off three straight wins and are looking like a real threat to take over the top spot in the Western Conference with a massive contest against Saint-Joseph this week.

Saskatchewan

  • We’ve been waiting to see where Central fit into the picture of the Rural Saskatchewan league, and we got a straight answer after Weyburn downed them 22-0 this past week. There’s still hope they can bounce back in the playoffs, but it’s looking like we’ll get a rematch between Weyburn and Yorkton in the finals to see who earns the honour of chasing the 5A Provincial crown.

British Columbia

  • The AA regular season is finally here, and they wasted no time offering up a juicy championship rematch between Robert Bateman and John Barsby to kickoff the festivities. Different year, but the same result for the Bulldogs, who simply couldn’t keep pace with the Timberwolves who pulled away for the 35-21 victory.
  • All eyes now turn to Holy Cross, who after an impressive preseason and dominant performance in their week one victory over Sardis are looking like potential contenders for a national top ten finish and top spot in the AAA/AA East Division. They will have a golden chance to prove they belong when they take on Abbotsford, Langley and Robert Bateman to round out their regular season campaign.

Manitoba

  • After three weeks, it looks like we’ve finally got a clear cut favourite in the new AAA Division with Fort Frances once again demolishing St. Norbert 63-6. The Muskies have now outscored their first three opponents by a combined score of 150-21. Beaver Brae also remains undefeated, but their 16-6 victory over Dryden was much tougher than they would’ve wanted. We will get the real answer in two weeks time when Fort Frances takes on Beaver Brae with first place on the line.
