CFC50 High School Rankings WEEK 6: Thrills and spills from coast to coast

Thrilling week of action ends with one new program entering the Top 10, and plenty of movement from 11th-50th with unexpected results in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, BC and Alberta.

HEADLINES

Manitoba

  • St. Paul’s retain their spot as the top dog in Manitoba with a 38-22 victory over Dakota in a championship rematch from last season. Will they meet again? Not if Oak Park has anything to say about it, who are the dark horse candidate to make an unexpected run through the playoffs sitting at 4-1 with their only loss of the year coming against the Crusaders.

Saskatchewan

  • Can anyone help us figure out Saskatoon this year? In an unexpected turn of events, Holy Cross were unable to keep their undefeated record alive after a 29-20 loss to CFC25 ranked Aden Bowman. The Bears are a formidable opponent, but we did not expect Holy Cross to falter this week, meanwhile their rivals from St. Joseph glided by Bishop J. Mahoney by a score of 34-6 –  who’re also a 5A program. Holy Cross barely scraped by Bishop J. Mahoney, and despite their victory over St. Joseph earlier in the season, we believe St. Joseph are the better football team right now if they had to play again. The real question is, who will be the better team come playoff time? And can either program compete with Miller for the 6A Provincial Title?

British Columbia

  • We’ve been waiting for somebody to give Vancouver College a run for their money, and Carson Graham were up to the task. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough in the tank to complete the upset, but they were competitive from start to finish leading 14-12 at halftime, and were fighting until the dying minutes before the Irish scored a late touchdown to put the final nail in the coffin for a 41-28 victory. This game could’ve gone either way, and we know the Eagles will be hungry for another shot at the Irish in the playoffs.
  • After a couple brutal losses to Carson Graham and Vancouver College, St. Thomas More got back in the win column with a 31-15 victory over South Delta. They have a long way to go if they want to reach elite status in BC this year, but don’t count out this talented Knights team from making some noise in the playoffs.
  • W.J. Mouat’s run on the CFC50 rankings ran out of steam this week with a tough 17-13 loss to Mt. Boucherie. Now we’ve got our eyes on Rutland, who have been enjoying a fantastic year so far including a 42-14 win over Lord Tweedsmuir this week. The Voodoo will be praying that the dark arts keep working in their favour with a pair of big contests against Kelowna and G.W. Graham coming up.

Alberta

  • Anything can happen during rivalry week, and Notre Dame harnessed the hype with a huge performance against St. Francis to secure a 21-14 victory. The Browns entered the game undefeated with their eyes set on first seed if they could beat Ernest Manning in the regular season finale, but the Pride had a different set of plans. Now Notre Dame needs to win out to secure the first round bye, and would have homefield advantage if they meet St. Francis in the semifinals.

CFC PROSPECT GAME/CFC SELECTION CAMP NOMINATIONS

Quebec

  • It was a much quieter week in La Belle province with only one CFC50 matchup on the card, and there was no surprise with St-Francois handling business against Cure-Antoine-Labelle with a 23-6 victory. The Blizzard remain tied for second place with College Bourget for now, but will need to be playing their best football down the stretch if they want to stay there with games against Armand-Corbeil and Saint-Jean-Eudes left on the schedule.

Ontario

  • It was a shocking week for Korah, who tumble down the rankings after St. Mary’s ran away with a convincing 37-14 victory. This leaves the Knights and Colts tied atop the standings at 4-1, with each handing each other a loss in their two game series. We’ve got one week of regular season action left, and then we’ve got a feeling these two will have the ultimate rubber match in the championship game. Can the Knights finally dethrone the Kings of Sault Ste. Marie? Stay tuned.
  • Bishop Tonnos found themselves in a war of attrition against S.J.H. Newman, but managed to come out on top 7-6 on Friday night. Both teams have had no problems scoring this year, so we are surprised it turned into a defensive slugfest. The Titans hold onto their top ten spot for now, but the Cardinals have fired off some warning shots that cannot be ignored come playoff time.
  • The biggest changeup on the rankings comes out of London where A.B. Lucas proved they belong in the conversation after hammering St. Thomas Aquinas 27-3. Now they turn their attention to Catholic Central, who will be eager to show that they also belong in the discussion for top team in Ontario this season.

Nova Scotia

  • Just when you think you’ve got things figured out – expect the unexpected. We aren’t shocked that Citadel lost, but we are surprised that they were no competition for Bay View who showed no mercy in their 33-1 victory over the Phoenix. Bay View are on a rampage through the division right now only allowing 5 points through four games, and it’s going to take a courageous effort if anyone wants to fend off the Sharks attack this season.
