The goal was to remain intractable defensively. The Rouge et Or can claim to have succeeded Sunday as those who blanked the Bishop’s Gaiters by a score of 44-0 at TELUS-Université Laval Stadium.
The victory, a 150th career for Laval’s Glen Constantin head coach, was acquired in difficult conditions of wind and rain. Beyond winning, the points on the board are also essential for Laval, who are in a fight to the finish with the Carabins for first place in the regular season RSEQ. If both teams win their final game next week, the team with the fewest points allowed in, get home advantage for all the playoffs.
Following Sunday’s games, Laval subtracted five points from the Carabins, who won 30-5 on Sherbrooke. Montreal still has a short priority, giving 72 points this year, against 77 for Laval.
Constantine, however, refused to stop the points conceded to the opponent. “That’s what we wanted, but we wanted to manage our game especially on the three phases of the game. In general, this is a great team win. The key for us was to win the match and continue to progress. our games were well executed, after a good training week, ” he stated.
Laval’s coach also wanted to give credit to his former student-athletes and fellow coaches, who helped him to reach the 150 wins plateau. “This is a contribution of many. I’m very proud, but it is the work of many coaches and players. I’m very grateful. “
The Rouge et Or completely dominated the Gaiters, totalling 590 yards against just 49 for Bishop’s. Visitors to the Eastern Townships were only successful first six downs, while Laval has obtained 29.
In terms of individual statistics, quarterback Hugo Richard did well with 21 of his 25 completions for 256 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Running back Sébastien Tight also had a strong game with 185 yards per run and a touchdown. He also caught a pass for 19 yards. The number 27 has earned 10 of 29 first tests of his.
“It’s always nice when our playing time increases, but it does not change my preparation,” humbly said one who had his best game since he wears the uniform of red and gold.
After a single on a failed kick with the wind in the face, the Laval attack was part of the score on the next series. Rouge et Or put a little more than two minutes to enter the red zone, with a floating pass by Hugo Richard Dufour towards Antony. It was 8-0, score that would remain intact until the end of the first quarter.
Laval took advantage of a fumble by the Gaiters deep in their territory in the middle of the second quarter. Three plays later, Richard was himself valuable in the end zone for his seventh major of the season was 15-0 in favour of the Reds. Followed a safety granted by Bishop’s who brought the score to 17-0.
Bishop’s then threatened, approaching to the Laval 10 yard line. But the defense was holding up, forcing them to retreat to the Gaiters 20. Field goal attempt of 27 yards was blocked by Marc-Antoine Varin, and the threat was stifled. Both teams entered the locker room with a score of 17-0.
Laval came back from halftime at full strength. Only four games were enough to cross the field and added a touchdown, that of Sébastien Tight on a 16-yard run.
On the next possession, Richard and his band took up the ball in their line 26. The result was the same as the previous series, while Laval crossed 84 yards on seven discounts, which passes the pivot for Antony Auclair touchdown. It was 31-0 after three.
The Gaiters gave another safety touch to the Reds. Then Richard completed his third touchdown of the day, this time to Mark Antony Pivin. The recovery punt resulted in the end zone for a single, and the score was 41-0.
Dominic Lévesque added a field goal of 28 yards late in the game.
The last part of the regular season in 2016 will be held in Sherbrooke on Saturday, October 29. The Rouge et Or will take on Vert & Or, which will absolutely take it to the playoffs.
Laval, for their part, are already assured of one of the two semifinals RSEQ November 5 at 14h, against an opponent to be determined. Tickets for this series duel are already on sale at the ticket Rouge et Or at 418 656-FOOT or online on the website of Réservatech.

The Carabins won a decisive victory of 30-5 against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or Sunday afternoon in front of 4687 spectators at CEPSUM. If the offense managed to score at the appropriate times, it is the defense that has been the key element in the game against Sherbrooke forcing them to commit six turnovers.
With the win, the Blues are guaranteed to finish in the top two positions in Quebec and get home field advantage. They still occupy the first level and have now awarded five points below the Laval Rouge et Or, winners of the Bishop’s Gaiters 44-0 by this afternoon. Remember that in case of identical record between Montreal and Laval, the team with the fewest regular season points will outperform the other in the standings.
Evolving under blustery conditions of gusts to 55 km/h, the Blues managed to win the battle of field position, a key element in a match that. Head coach, Danny Maciocia, was visibly pleased with the final result. “We found the way to victory, it feels good. a short field we gave our offense so that it can work well. We converted the two interceptions touched, so it helped us out. “
Playing in such bad conditions, both teams struggled to perform aerial games long distance. The attacks became predictable in the first quarter of the game, and the spectators at CEPSUM were treated to a show: three for Sherbrooke, four to Montreal. The game opened up somewhat during the second period and the Blues were the first to open the scoring. Régis Cibasu (Administration, HEC Montreal) dragged a part of the opposing party on his back during an aerial gain of 26 yards and Samuel Caron (Civil Engineering, Polytechnic) found William Paquet (Industrial Relations) in the left flank for a touchdown of 11 yards.
After a turnaround that resulted in a kick of 16 yards Mathieu Hébert of Laval, the Carabins got the ball in the final minute of the first half and Caron completed four passes for 57 yards en route to the touched Louis-Mathieu Normandin (Administration, HEC Montreal) on seven yards. The Carabins headed into the locker room with a lead of 10 points on the scoreboard.
The second half of the meeting was the matter of the Montreal defense. Leading by eight after offering a safety touch, Samuel Drapeau (Management, HEC Montreal) intercepted the pass to Jean-Christophe Bourque-St-Hilaire and shot straight to the end zone. 54 yards away, defensive back has been stopped, which allowed Gabriel Parent (Homeland Security) to include the subsequently hit with a five-yard run. In the next sequence, and virtually the same spot on the field, Allan Lambert (Film Studies) crossed the passes of the opposing quarter then brought the ball up the line from seven yards of Sherbrooke. Sean Thomas Erlington (Health and Physical Education) completed the effort with the major seven yards. The Carabin’s defense continued their work of domination in the fourth quarter. The Sherbrooke attack never found a way to break through the defensive front Carabins, is admitting defeat without even counting one hit. The Blues have especially made five sacks and three interceptions.
The kicker Felix Menard-Brière (Landscape Architecture) had a meeting. In addition to adding a point to the meter on a single during the fourth quarter, the Blues specialist made 12 kicks (five within 20 yards of the opposing area) for a convincing average of 41 yards per punt, which one of 93 yards that forced the Green and Gold to revive its offensive deep in his zone.
The Blues have amassed 260 rushing yards, including 203 by Parent (126) and Thomas Erlington (77), while Junior Luke (Addiction Prevention and Rehabilitation) collected a sack and an interception in another impressive.
“We did a great job in defense, Luke said. We had to contain the quarterback because he’s very good when it moves outside its protective pouch. We have content, in addition to creating turnovers. We played 60 minutes and it paid off. “
Samuel Caron completed his work day with 16 completions in 27 attempts for gains of 150 yards and two touchdowns. He has not been intercepted. His vis-à-vis Bourque St-Hilaire has meanwhile completed 12 passes of 28 for 143 yards.
The next meeting of the Blues, the last of this 2016 campaign, will take the side of Percival Molson Stadium and oppose the Carabins to the McGill Redmen. The Carabins then begin the playoffs the following weekend with the holding of the provincial semi-final at CEPSUM on Saturday November 5 at 14h.

The Saskatchewan Huskies took full advantage of their opportunities Saturday afternoon, handing the fourth-ranked Calgary Dinos their first on-field regular season home loss in more than six years with a 38-35 triumph at McMahon Stadium.
The loss snaps a nine-game win streak for the Dinos over Saskatchewan and was the first regular season defeat at home since the first game of the 2010 season, notwithstanding a forfeit in early 2014. The loss drops the Dinos to 5-2 on the year with one game to play, while Saskatchewan improves to 4-3, clinching a playoff spot.
Kyle Siemens completed 25 of 38 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies in a back-and-forth game that got more interesting than it maybe should have been down the stretch.
On the final play of the third quarter, Siemens ran in a one-yard touchdown following a 62-yard passing play to Chad Braun on which the Dinos were unable to overcome sloppy tackling – a theme to the contest. A roughing the passer was tacked on – orange nylon being another theme – to set up the ball on the one-yard line, and Siemens’ TD gave Saskatchewan the lead at 23-22.
Through the next 10 minutes, the Huskies found the end zone twice more thanks to a nine-play, 78-yard drive capped off by Tyler Chow’s five-yard run, with Chow scoring a one-yard TD on Saskatchewan’s next possession. That TD, however, was a field goal until an unnecessary roughness penalty on Calgary with Sean Stenger out to split the uprights turned third down into first and Chow waltzed in.
That four-point swing would come back to hurt the Dinos as the game turned wild in the final three minutes. After a two-and-out, a Calgary punt was mishandled by Braun and recovered by Denzel Radford, setting up a one-yard toss from Adam Sinagra to Anthony Anderson to pull the Dinos closer. The two-point convert attempt failed, making it 38-28 with two minutes to play.
After the Huskies recovered the onside kick, Siemens fumbled the snap on a routine third-and-inches play, and Calgary’s Nick Statz picked up the loose ball and ran it back 60 yards for another major to bring the Dinos within three at 38-35 – but again, Saskatchewan recovered the onside kick attempt to seal the victory.
All told, Calgary was flagged 16 times for 133 yards in the contest, while the Huskies picked up just seven penalties for 59 yards – clearly a difference in the ball game.
“Our discipline was poor, our execution was off, and they were able to turn some short passes into long plays,” said Calgary head coach Wayne Harris after the loss. “Our tackling wasn’t up to par today, and our defence didn’t play at the standard they’re accustomed to today. You need to have that going into the playoffs – that’s the strength of our team, and we didn’t get it done today.”
Case in point for Calgary was Yol Piok’s touchdown late in the opening half. Siemens found Piok just across the Saskatchewan 50-yard line, and the receiver pinballed off a couple Dinos defenders who couldn’t wrap him up and took off downfield. Three Dinos converged on him inside the 10, and Piok managed to carry all three of them into the end zone for a spectacular 65-yard touchdown.
Saskatchewan’s other score came courtesy of a 16-yard pass by Siemens to Colton Klassen early in the first quarter. Sean Stenger added a trio of singles on the day.
Calgary got additional scores from Sinagra (14 yards) and Josiah Joseph (one yard) on the ground, with Niko DiFonte adding a missed field goal single late in the third quarter.
In total, Saskatchewan out-gained the Dinos by a 446-317 margin. For Calgary, rookie quarterback Sinagra – playing for the injured Jimmy Underdahl – completed 21 of 35 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. One of those, a 15-yard strike that gave Calgary its first lead in the second quarter – went to Brendon Thera-Plamondon, who was making his first appearance in the lineup of the season. Thera-Plamondon finished as the team’s leading receiver with four catches for 55 yards.
Bryce Harper managed 48 yards on 17 carries for Calgary with Sinagra not far behind with 44 rushing yards. Chow led the way for the Huskies, picking up 84 yards on 16 carries.
Calgary’s Hunter Turnbull led all tacklers with eight, followed by Micah Teitz with seven solos and two assisted. Jacob Solie and Ben Whiting paced the Huskies defensively with six and 4.5, respectively.
With one week of Canada West play left, the playoff scenario remains murky. For Calgary, a win at UBC would clinch at least second place, while a loss coupled with a Saskatchewan win would, in all likelihood, send the Dinos to Saskatoon for the first round of the playoffs. It all gets underway Friday night when the Huskies host Alberta on Shaw TV (7 p.m. MT), followed by a pair of critical games Saturday as Regina heads to Manitoba (8 p.m. CT) and Calgary faces UBC in Vancouver (5 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. MT).

Bisons win epic 7OT game with 67-59 win at Alberta in football https://t.co/IxoOuLD0oM

Septuplet overtime finish? Check. Longest football game in Canada West football history? Done. A quarterback catching a two-point convert in an overtime session? Got it. More points scored in overtime than in regulation time? Of course. Second highest scoring game in conference history, but a defensive play to seal the win? Naturally. You could confidently argue that the Oct. 22nd afternoon tilt between the one-win University of Alberta Golden Bears and the two-win Manitoba Bisons had it all, and in fact was one of the most exciting games of the Canada West football season. The only story line missing? A win for the home team in the final home game of the season, as the Bears dropped a thrilling and heartbreaking 67-59 seven OT loss to the Bisons at Foote Field.
Despite all the offensive fireworks, it was rookie defensive back Tanner Hamade who picked the perfect moment to be the unlikely hero as the Bisons defender stepped in front of a Ben Kopczynski pass at the Manitoba 2-yard line in the seventh OT to end the offensive outpouring. By the time the Abbotsford, B.C. native recorded his first INT of the season, the teams had combined for 1,334 yards of offence and 126 points, including 69 points in the seven overtime sessions. The receiver he was covering? None other than Alberta’s Tylor Henry, who had banked a Canada West record 19 catches for 298 yards to that point, which was just five yards shy of breaking the conference single game receiving yards record.
It was a wildly unpredictable finish to a wildly unpredictable game played between two teams on the outside of the Canada West playoff picture. The loss, in fact, officially eliminated the Golden Bears from post-season contention, as they drop to a 1-6 record. Manitoba, meanwhile, entered the contest with a 2-4 record, and in second last. While the win propels them to 3-4, and back into the mix for the final playoff position, they are now tied with the UBC Thunderbirds for the fourth spot in the standings with one game remaining. Should Manitoba and UBC finish with identical records (3-5 or 4-4), UBC owns the head-to-head tie break based on UBC’s 53-50 win over Manitoba this season in the lone meeting between the two.
However, with the Saskatchewan Huskies win over Calgary on Saturday afternoon, the Huskies, Bisons and Birds could all end up at 4-4 to end the season, and if all three teams finish 4-4, Manitoba and Saskatchewan will advance to the playoffs based on the tie-breakers.
The Bisons will conclude the regular season next weekend at home to the first place Regina Rams, while the Golden Bears will finish their season on the road at Saskatchewan.
On Saturday at Foote Field, however, the teams combined for amazing afternoon of football. After scoring 28 points each in regulation time, the Bears and Bisons put an absolute aerial show, matching each other play for play. Each team scored a converted TD in the first OT; a field goal in the second; a converted touchdown in the third OT; a two-point converted touchdown each in the fourth overtime, with Manitoba quarterback Theo Deezar catching the successful two-point convert on a gadget play, and then consecutive field goals by each team to make the score 59-59. On Manitoba’s next possession, Deezar rushed on back-to-back plays, for a total of 14 yards, to position the Bisons at the 6-yard line. From there Deezar hit Riley Harrison for the go-ahead score, and then found Trystan Dyce in the endzone for the 2-point convert and a 67-59 lead.
Kopczynski, who completed 30 of 53 passes for 460 yards and three touchdowns to that point, had been brilliant for the Bears all game. He and Henry were a lethal combo, but when they tried to connect on what would have been Henry’s 20th catch of the game, and record breaking receiving yards, Hamade stepped in front of the Kopczynski’s pass attempt at the 2-yard line to end the game, and preserve the win.
Alberta’s sophomore quarterback also rushed 13 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns, both goal line efforts, while fourth-year runningback Ed Ilnicki performed yeoman’s work once again, hauling the rock 21 times for 95 yards. He also found his first rushing TD of the season, and now has an even 700 yards on the ground this season, second most in the conference.
Receivers Adam Zajdel and Rocky Borrelli also scored touchdowns for the Bears, both in overtime.
Deezar had a wild night as well, completing 34 of 56 passes for 393 yards and five touchdown passes. The veteran gunslinger was picked off twice, but did rush eight times for 54 yards, including those crucial 14-yards in the seventh OT to sustain the game winning drive.
His main target was Harrison, who finished with 11 grabs and 91 yards, as well as two TDs. Jesse Walker also picked up a receiving TD, to go along with eight receptions and 94 yards. Runningback Alex Christie churned out 183 rush yards on the day, as well as one TD. Cam Fox also scored a pair of TDs for the visitors, one rushing and one receiving TD, while Mike Thompson had one catch on the day, a 44-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter.
Defensively, Manitoba was led by Houston Rennie and his team leading eight tackles and three pass break-ups. Derek Dufault also had eight tackles in the win, while Jayden McKoy had 7.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Tak Landry led the Alberta defensive effort, making a game high 11 tackles, while fifth-years Tom Tsoumpas and Brandon Foster added 10.5 and eight tackles respectively. Both linebackers were playing in their final career home games as well, and Tsoumpas made it memorable, also recording an interception. Safety Ryan Migadel recorded Alberta’s other INT on the day, while also making seven tackles.
The Golden Bears will play their final game of the 2016 season on Friday, October 28 at the University of Saskatchewan. Manitoba, meanwhile, will host conference leading Regina on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. CDT.

Rookie kicker Findlay Brown of Winnipeg, Man., made four field goals and tallied 13 points as McGill coasted to a 21-8 road victory at Concordia on a rain-soaked afternoon of RSEQ football, Saturday.
The result snapped Concordia’s five-game win streak over the Redmen and the eight points scored was their lowest offensive output against McGill since a 10-6 loss in the 2002 Dunsmore Cup game.
McGill, which improved to 4-3, moved into the driver’s seat for a probable playoff berth with one week remaining on their schedule. It is the most victories by a McGill squad since the 2004 season when they posted a 4-4 fourth-place finish.
Despite a constant drizzle, the 18-year-old Brown nailed all four of his field-goal attempts, connecting from distances of 20, 20, 19 and 36, respectively. A measure of consistency, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound management freshman averaged 37.8 yards on nine punts and 45.0 on a pair of kickoffs. Brown also converted quarterback Frederic Paquette-Perrault‘s one-yard touchdown plunge that put the Redmen ahead 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter, capping a 12-play, 109-yard scoring drive. Brown has been successful on 14 of 16 field-goal attempts this season and is ranked third in the conference scoring race with an average of 9.1 points per game.
Paquette-Perrault directed an offence that generated 19 first downs and 376 yards, compared to 16 and 279, respectively, by Concordia. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound rookie completed 15 of 25 passes for 177 yards and no interceptions for the second straight outing. He rushed four times for 17 yards.and one TD.
McGill also dominated the ground game with 211 yards, compared to only 43 for the Stingers. Leading the way was running back Nicolas Khandar, who amassed a career-high 152 rushing yards on 20 carries.
The game featured 30 penalties for 229 penalty yards of real estate, including 149 charged against the Redmen.
McGill led 3-0 after the opening quarter, 18-0 at halftime and 18-1 after three.
Ahead 21-1 with less than a minute remaining in the game, the Redmen defence finally wilted, as Concordia scored their only TD on a 34-yard bomb from Trenton Miller to Justin Julien. In the end, the Stingers lost by 13 points after winning the first meeting of the season by 14 points, so they hold the tie-breaker needed on point-differential with McGill, should the teams end up tied in the standings
Miller was 18-for-40 passing, for 244 yards, one TD and an interception. His favourite target was Julien, who collected a game-high 96 yards on four receptions.
Concordia (3-4) now faces a must-win game at Bishop’s (1-5) to close out the season on Oct. 29. The scenario will be come a little less foggy after the Sherbrooke-Montreal and Bishop’s Laval matchups this Sunday. Barring any upsets over the final week of play, Sherbrooke (3-3) could catch McGill for the final playoff spot if they surprise Montreal or Laval next week. If the Vert & Or pull off a win in one of those mismatches, then the Redmen would need to win their Homecoming Game against the division-leading Carabins (5-1) on Oct. 29. Sherbrooke could also beat out Concordia if the Stingers lose their final game at last-place Bishop’s (1-6).
REDMEN RAP: Rookie DB Benjamin Carre spearheaded a voracious McGill defence with 6.5 tackles, including two for loss and a quarterback sack… Strong-side LB Antoine Mongeau and weak-side LB Maxime Rouyer were each credited with six total tackles… Also receiving credit for a sack was DL Ousmane Guindo… Rookie DB Vincent Dethier registered his second interception of the season.. The last time the Redmen made the playoffs, was in 2012 with a 3-6 record…. Mcgill is now 38-41 in 79 lifetime meetings with the Stingers.

The Ravens are headed to playoffs as the fourth ranked seed after defeating the Waterloo Warriors, 43-15, in the final regular season game.
“We were hoping at this point we would be in the conversation for the Yates Cup, but almost more importantly, we were hoping to get that first playoff game on campus,” said head coach Steve Sumarah about the team’s progress. “It shows that we really have come a long way.”
Carleton started off the scoring against the Warriors mid-first quarter with a 65-yard connection from Mills to Behar. With 4:16 left on the clock, Jayde Rowe (Scarborough, ON) had an 8-yard run for a touchdown, bringing the Ravens lead up to 14. Mike Domagala (St. Catharines, ON) finished off the first quarter with a 27-yard field goal.
The Ravens continued to add to their score early in the second quarter, as Mills found receiver Dexter Brown (Sherwood Park, AB) on a 40-yard pass for another touchdown. The Ravens brought their lead to 24, while the Warriors remained scoreless.
A Carleton fumble put the Warriors in great scoring position, as they picked up the ball at the one-yard line. Waterloo pushed their way into the end zone, and found themselves on the board.
Carleton once again made their way down the field. A big rush of 42 yards by Rowe put the Ravens one yard short of a touchdown. On the next play, Mills and his strong offensive linemen plowed their way past Waterloo defenders for another touchdown.
Carleton led 31-7 over Waterloo going into the second half.
A pair of field goals by Domagala allowed the Ravens to pull away with their lead. Waterloo conceded a safety, and the Ravens found themselves with a 39-8 lead.
Waterloo ended the third quarter with a touchdown, making the score 39-15, in favour of Carleton.
Two more safeties in the fourth quarter finalized the win, as the Ravens ended the Warriors season with a final score, 43-15.
Many Carleton starters were taken off of the field for the second half of the game for precautionary measures. “We wanted to make sure our guys were fully rested and healthy, because at this time of the year, any time you can get extra rest for your guys it is only going to benefit them,” explained Sumarah.
While Carleton was certainly favoured going into today’s game, they focused on the task at hand, and were able to get their sixth win of the regular season.
“[We] knew that we had a chance to go 6-2 which is an improvement from last year,” said Sumarah. “It speaks to progress, and I think the guys were motivated to go out and perform so we could get to that 6-2 mark.”
VanWynsberghe reiterated this point, explaining that every game is important in the regular season. “We tried to make the game about us, and focused on what we needed to do. […] The real season begins now. We are more excited than we have ever been.”
CARLETON RECORDS:
With nine receptions during Saturday’s game, Nate Behar (London, ON) set a new record at Carleton for most receptions in a single season. Behar’s 57 receptions in 2016 surpassed Marc Dinardo’s 51 receptions during the 1997 season.
Quarterback Jesse Mills (Halifax, NS) also set a Carleton record for passing completions in a single season. Mills held the record for his 2015 performance, with 152 completions. Despite playing only the first half of the game in Waterloo, Mills added 17 completions to his total, setting a new personal best with 166 pass completions in his final season.
RAVENS VS. GEE-GEES: PART II
The win over Waterloo guaranteed the Ravens their first home playoff game since 1986. The city of Ottawa will be alive once again as Carleton takes on the University of Ottawa in another rivalry match-up. This time, rather than Pedro the Panda up for grabs, a trip to the semifinal game is on the line.
“This actually has a lot more value and importance [than Panda Game] because it is a one-and-done game,” said Sumarah. “I think it is going to bring a different level of intensity, a different level of focus for our guys knowing that we are in playoffs.”
Ravens receiver Kyle VanWynsberghe (Delhi, ON) agrees with his coach, that although Panda is an exciting game at the time, it is in the past, and they are preparing for a much bigger game against uOttawa.
“Panda is cool, but it means absolutely nothing now,” said VanWynsberghe. “It is very difficult to beat a team twice, in my opinion. Ottawa is a very well coached team, and they have some talented players, but we have to win.”

MARAUDER FOOTBALL EDGED BY MUSTANGS https://t.co/FqrT5G7X2k
— McMaster Athletics (@McMasterSports) October 22, 2016
McMaster (18), Western (19)
Source: McMaster Marauders
It was a game that lived up to the hype as the Western Mustangs used a fourth-quarter rouge, their only points of the second-half, to edge the McMaster football team 19-18 and clinch first-place in the OUA standings. With the loss, McMaster will finish 6 and 2 and in third place, The Marauders will be at home for a quarter-final on Saturday, October 29th at Ron Joyce Stadium versus the Guelph Gryphons.
The high winds blowing in London made things difficult for both teams as the passing game depended on who had the breeze at their back. Western held an 5-1 lead after the first quarter on a safety and a field goal, while McMaster had only a rouge on a missed field goal attempt.
Western went up 8-1 early in the second quarter, but the Marauders tied the game on a one-yard plunge by Asher Hastings. The Mustangs responded with 10 points to end the quarter and take an 18-8 lead into the half.
Playing with the wind in the third quarter, Hastings hit Mitch O’Connor for a 35-yard touchdown and Adam Preocanin hit a 50-yard field goal to tie the score at 18-18, heading to the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw both defenses step up and neither team was able to score, until the Mustangs took advantage of a blocked punt to get good field possession in McMaster territory. When the drive stalled, Western tried a field goal and though it was wide, the Marauders were not able to get out of the end zone and gave up the final single-point that was the margin of victory for Western.

FB (FINAL): Gryphons 52 – York 8. Gryphons grab the final playoff spot and will head to Hamilton next Saturday to face @McMasterSports
— Guelph Gryphons (@guelph_gryphons) October 22, 2016
York (8), Guelph (52)

The defending Yates Cup champions are playoff-bound. In cold and windy conditions on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium, the Gryphons (3-5) won 52-8 over the visiting York Lions (2-6). With that victory, combined with losses by both Queen’s and Windsor, the Gryphons locked up the sixth and final spot in the OUA playoffs. The Gryphons will now head to Hamilton next Saturday (Oct. 29) to face the No. 3-seeded McMaster Marauders (6-2) in an OUA Quarterfinal matchup. Both Guelph and Queen’s finished the regular season with identical 3-5 records, but it was the Gryphons advancing on the tiebreak after having won their head-to-head meeting with the Gaels back in Week 3.
By halftime on Saturday, the Gryphons held a 27-0 lead over York. After three quarters of play, they led 37-8. Although the end result between Guelph and York was never really in doubt, the Gryphons playoff hopes certainly were. In order for the Gryphons to advance to the postseason, they needed some help on the out-of-town scoreboard as either a Queen’s or Windsor win would have put an end to the Gryphons 2016 season. Windsor was thumped 38-9 by Laurier. The problem was with the Queen’s result. The Gaels played at home against the No. 9-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees in a thrilling, high-scoring affair that needed overtime with both teams tied at 34-34 after four quarters. After Queen’s opened overtime with a touchdown and extra point, the Gee-Gees answered with a TD of their own. However, instead of kicking an extra point and heading to a second overtime, Ottawa elected to go for a two-point conversion to end the game right then and there. Gee-Gees receiver Mitchell Baines, the brother of Gryphons linebackerRiley Baines, made a circus catch which not only sealed the win for the Gee-Gees, but also allowed the Gryphons to grab the sixth and final playoff spot.
After the game, Riley received a text from his brother with a message that was meant to be relayed to the rest of the Gryphons team. The text consisted of only two words:
“You’re welcome.”
While the Gryphons were certainly appreciative of the Gee-Gees overtime heroics, Guelph had to make sure to do their job on Saturday and take care of business against the York Lions. The Gryphons did just that.
For a fourth straight week, the Gryphons were forced to play without the services of All-Canadian returnerRyan Nieuwesteeg who was once again not in the lineup due to a foot injury. With Nieuwesteeg out, the Gryphons called upon rookie receiver Jordan Terrio to help handle punt return duties. Terrio, who attended the same high school as Nieuwesteeg, St. Paul Catholic in Niagara Falls, would do his best Nieuwesteeg impersonation in the opening quarter by ripping off an electric 46-yard punt return all the way down to the York 21-yard line. The Gryphons would take advantage of the short field as Johnny Augustine would power his way into the endzone from 9-yards out to give Guelph an early 10-0 lead. Augustine nearly eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the first half alone, rushing for 98 yards on 15 carries while finding the endzone twice. Augustine finished the day with 22 carries for 133 yards.
Defensively, the Gryphons received several standout performances, including a big game from fifth year free safety Tristan Doughlin. The former First Team OUA All-Star would pick off York quarterback Brett Hunchak on two different occassions. In the opening half of play, the Gryphon defence recorded two interceptions, two sacks and had limited Lions QB Brett Hunchak to just 138 yards through the air on 20 pass attempts.
With both the Gryphon defence and special teams coming up with some big plays early on, the Gryphon offence would follow suit with one of their own midway through the second quarter. Second year receiverKade Belyk (Regina, SK) would haul in a short pass from James Roberts before getting a block and turning up field for a 73-yard touchdown. It was the first TD of Belyk’s career and extended the Gryphons lead to 24-0.
After the York Lions opened scoring in the second half, the Gryphons would answer right back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from James Roberts to senior tight end Geoff Bezruchko to give the Gryphs a 34-8 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining in the final quarter and with the Gryphons leading 39-8, both teams would be forced to sit through a lengthy delay after York defensive end Rossini Sandjong-Djabome suffered a scary injury that saw him lay motionless on the field for an extended period of time before eventually being stretchered off the field after an apparent neck injury.
When play resumed, the Gryphons would tack on a late touchdown on a nice TD run by Jamal Hookerwho spun out of a tackle before rumbling 34-yards to the endzone.
The York Lions entered Saturday’s game ranked dead last in the country in stopping the run and the Gryphons took note, racking up a season-high 422 yards on the ground. Second year running back Mack Jones led the way with 16 carries for 141 yards, Johnny Augustine finished with 133, while Jamal Hooker racked up 83 rushing yards on just four carries. Gryphons third year quarterback James Roberts threw the ball just 16 times, finishing the day 10-of-16, 177 yards, 2 TD & 1 INT. Kade Belyk was Guelph’s leading receiver with five catches for 115 yards and 1 TD. Kicker Gabe Ferraro was 4 of 6 on field goals while linebacker Luke Korol finished with a team-high 8.5 tackles. The Gryphons players and coaches wore pink accents as part of their annual “Think Pink” game in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Gryphons will now prepare to defend their Yates Cup title as they head to Ron Joyce Stadium next Saturday to face the No. 5-ranked McMaster Marauders (6-2). The Gryphons lost 27-15 earlier this season during a trip to Hamilton for McMaster’s homecoming.

The No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team clinched second place in the OUA and a first-round playoff bye on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Windsor Lancers 38-9 at Alumni Field.
The victory gives the Hawks a 7-1 record on the year, giving them their best finish since 2007, and marks a turnaround for the program that saw the team improve from 1-7 under head coach Michael Faulds’ first season in 2013.
“The success we’ve enjoyed this season is extra special because of where we were,” said Faulds after the victory. “It’s a testament to all our players and staff. The message we brought to the program back in 2013 was to stay the course. The players knew it was going to be a process that would take time. Our guys truly bought into that and have trusted in the staff. We’re finally seeing the rewards of all our hard work that we put in.”
As they have done all season, Laurier used a balanced rushing attack and a stout defence to knock off the Lancers. However, the Hawks also threw an accurate passing game at their opponents to round out a performance that saw the purple and gold end a four-game losing streak against Windsor.
Quarterback Michael Knevel of Brantford, Ont., was the star of the game for Laurier as he had a career-afternoon, completing 15-of-20 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown in windy conditions. Knevel’s 15 completions matched his career-best while his 298 yards through the air were a new career record.
His favourite targets on the day were wideouts Kurleigh Gittens Jr. of Ottawa, and Brentyn Hall of Toronto. Gittens Jr. had a game-high 122 yards through the air, the second most of his career, while Hall had 113 yards.
Fellow receiver Marcus Arkarakas of Richmond Hill, Ont., had the Hawks’ lone major through the air to go along with three catches for 61 yards.
On the ground, Levondre Gordon of Mississauga, Ont., continued his breakout season with his third 100-plus yard rushing game of the year, finishing with 109 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Gordon’s performance allowed him to finish the season averaging 8.7 yards per carry, tops in the conference by a yard and a half.
Fellow sophomore Osayi Iginuan of Hamilton, had 13 carries for 92 yards while fifth year Eric Guiltinan of London, Ont., had 46 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts.
Guiltinan’s two touchdowns set the tone early for Laurier as they rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 14-1 lead after the first quarter.
Both Guiltinan and Gordon also finished inside the Top 7 in the conference in rushing yards with 736 and 637 respectively.
In total, Laurier posted 563 yards of offence in the game to just 150 for the Lancers.
The defensive effort was once again anchored by linebacker Nakas Onyeka of Brampton, Ont., who had nine total tackles and a sack in the victory. Onyeka finishes the season ranked first in the conference in solo tackles with 51 and second in tackles for a loss with 15.
Also shining on defence was defensive lineman Trevaughan James of Whitby, Ont., who had five tackles and recovered a fumble for a touchdown. The touchdown was the sixth of the season for Laurier’s defence, leaving them first in the conference in the category.
“It’s kind of neat that all six defensive touchdowns happened in different games,” stated Faulds on the play of his defence this season. “Scoring six in eight games is unheard of in this league. Our defence will be tough our opposition to prepare for as we move forward into the playoffs.”
Windsor’s top performers were quarterback Jalen Brady of Southfield, Mich., who was 10-for-16 for 86 yards while running back Tarrence Crawford of Windsor, Ont., had 68 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Receiver Chris Tannous of Leamington, Ont., scored Windsor’s only major of the game on a seven-yard pass late in the contest.
Laurier will now have two weeks to prepare for their first home playoff game since 2010.
“We’re a confident groups but we have lots to improve on,” said Faulds on the Hawks’ mindset heading into postseason. “This we can get guys healthy and fine-tune some things on both sides of the ball. We can’t prepare for one team because we know there can be upsets so this week we’ll concentrate on us getting better.”
Stay tuned to laurierathletics.com for game and ticket information for the OUA Semifinal set for Saturday, November 5 at University Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on CHCH.
NOTES: Laurier finished the season with 2259 rushing yards, the fourth most in team history and the most in a single season since 1977…the Hawks 341 points were the second-most in a single season in team history, trailing only the 343 they posted in 2004…Gittens Jr. finished the year with 293 kickoff return yards, the sixth most by a single player in school history…Onyeka’s 59.5 total tackles this season tie him for fourth on Laurier’s single-season list with Kevin MacNeill…he also moved into third place on the Hawks’ all-time career tackles list with 155

FB – Queen's season ends after 42-41 OT loss to No.9 Ottawa #ChaGheill https://t.co/hIQhwHPh96
— #ChaGheill (@queensgaels) October 22, 2016
Ottawa (42), Queen’s (41) OT
Source: Peter Reimer (Sports Information Intern), Queen’s Gaels
The Gaels lost a heartbreaker against No.9 Ottawa in overtime on the last day of the regular season at Richardson Stadium in cold, wet, and windy conditions. The Gee-Gees took their only lead of the day on the last play of the game to win 42-41.
Ending the season at 3-5, Queen’s finishes level with Guelph in the standings. The Gaels fall out of a playoff spot because the Gryphons won the head-to-head tie-break.
GAME FLOW
The first quarter started with a strong sack for the Gaels defence, with Nick Dowd (Gananoque, Ont.) taking down Ottawa quarterback Derek Wendel on the first offensive play of the game. The Gee-Gees went two-and-out, and punted into the wind from their own goal line. Jonah Pataki (Wallaceburg, Ont.) started a career day with three runs on the Gaels first three plays, including a 27-yarder that set up a first and goal on the one yard line. Nate Hobbs(Mississauga, Ont.) put Queen’s up 7-0 with a quarterback sneak early in the first quarter. The next two Gaels possessions ended on the Ottawa one and two yard lines, but yielded no points after Queen’s turned the ball over on downs. Kyle Gouveia (Brampton, Ont.) checked into the game for a few plays at the end of the first quarter after Hobbs went down favouring his ankle.
After Nicholas Fraser-Greene (Mississauga, Ont.) grabbed his first interception of the day at the Ottawa 19 yard line, the Gaels switched to fullback Eric Dodwell (Kingston, Ont.) at the goal line, who ran through the line from two yards out to score. With Queen’s up 16-0, Gouveia took over the Gaels quarterbacking duties for good with 10 minutes to play in the second. After Ottawa got on the board with a 32 yard field goal, Niclas Bembenek (Winnipeg, Man.) responded for the Gaels with his only field goal of the day. The Gee-Gees went into halftime with a touchdown on the final play of second quarter, which was set up by a mishandled field goal return by Queen’s.
The teams traded rouges to start the third quarter, before Gee-Gees kicker Lewis Ward hit another field goal. Queen’s marched the field on the next drive, which culminated in a 35 yard touchdown pass from Gouveia to Matteo Del Brocco(Leamington, Ont.). Ottawa started to look dangerous on the following possession, with Mitchell Baines making a 43 yard catch to kick-start a 102 yard drive that ended in a Gee-Gees touchdown.
Ottawa narrowed the deficit to 24-27 before Fraser-Greene came up with his second interception of the game and returned it 40 yards for a Gaels touchdown. The very next drive saw Ottawa cruise down the field in four plays to score just a minute later and leave the score at 34-31 in favour of Queen’s. Still up three points with under five minutes to play, the tricolour were forced to punt from their own 47. The snap sailed over the Gaels punter all the way to the eight yard line, where Ottawa took over on downs with three minutes remaining in regulation. After two incomplete passes, the Gee-Gees tied the game with a field goal to force overtime.
Queen’s had the first possession in extra time, and Gouveia found Peter Hannon (Toronto) and Del Brocco on back-to-back passes to set up first and goal. Rudy Uhl (North Vancouver, B.C.) caught a Gouveia pass in the flats to put the pressure on Ottawa and the Gaels up 41-34. With the game on the line, Wendel found Bryce Vieira from 20 yards out for the touchdown. In a gutsy move, Ottawa went for the two-point conversion. They score: they win. They miss: Queen’s wins and makes the playoffs. Wendel rolled out to the right and Baines reeled in a tipped pass to end the Gaels season with a gut-wrenching overtime loss.

Twenty-two points in the second half gave the CIS No. 10 ranked StFX X-Men (6-1) a 33-29 win over the host Acadia Axemen (1-6).
Trailing 25-11 at the half, the X-Men posted two majors, a field goal, two safeties and a rouge to grab the come-from-behind victory – their third against the Axemen this season.
Acadia jumped on the scoreboard on the opening kickoff with a safety to take a 2-0 lead, but StFX answered back on their second play from the line of scrimmage when Jordan Socholotiuk (Fort McMurray, AB) scampered 71 yards for the only X-Men major of the first half.
Acadia picked up two safeties in the first quarter as both teams battled for good field position and Brandon Jennings (St. Albert, AB) added a field goal in the closing minute of the opening quarter to give the Axemen an 8-7 advantage.
Jonathan Heidebrecht (Camrose, AB) tied the game at eight on a missed 27-yard field goal that added a rouge to the X-Men tally.
Brandon Jennings added a 42-yard field goal, his first of a two on the day, to give Acadia a 11-8 lead. Heidebrecht added yet another rouge to narrow the gap to 11-10.
Jennings was called on again to kick his second and final field goal from 30 yards out, before the Axemen struck with their first of two first-half touchdowns.
A Tivon Cook (Scarborough, ON) pass that was intercepted by Acadia’s Harland Hastings (Calgary, AB) set up a drive that began at StFX’s 44 yard line. The Axemen pushed 27 yards down field on seven plays before attempting a field goal. With Jennings’ wide field goal attempt, the Axemen were quickly given the ball back after a roughing the kicker penalty was assessed to StFX.
Acadia pivot Cody Cluett (Cole Harbour, NS) found senior receiver Sabastian Robinson (Saskatoon, SK) in the end zone for Acadia’s first touchdown.
Trailing 18-8, Heidebrecht nailed his second of three field goals to close the margin to 18-11 but the Axemen responded with their second and last major of the day with 30 seconds remaining in the first half.
Rookie running back Dillon Fortune (Brooklyn, NY) capped a seven play, 75 yard drive on an 11 yard run, to give Acadia a 25-11 halftime lead.
The X-Men went to work in the second half compiling 21 unanswered points after Acadia’s early third quarter team safety on a Tommy Grant (Halifax, NS) sack.
Heidebrecht opened with a 13-yard field goal early in the third frame. Socholotiuk punched in his second touchdown of the day on a 6 yard run after Brandon Jennings’ 43-yard punt was returned 52 yards by Kaion Grant(Toronto, ON) to the Acadia six yard line.
After an added team safety by the X-Men at 3:47 of the third quarter, Grant scored on a 35-yard pass reception from Tivon Cook to give StFX their first lead of the day at 30-27 at the end of the third quarter.
The X-Men held onto the lead throughout the final quarter with a team safety and a rouge in the closing seconds of the game. Acadia added a team safety.
The X-Men outgained Acadia 396 to 291 yards in total offense including 177 yards in the air. Cook compiled 177 yards passing and was 14 of 22 pass attempts. StFX rushed for 278 net yards compared to Acadia’s 120.
Socholotiuk had 223 yards on the ground for an 8.3 yards per run average and two touchdowns, while Axemen rookies Daniel Obiang and Dillon Fortune had 31 and 89 respectively. Fortune was named the Subway Player of the Game for the Axemen.
Defensive halfback Nathan Fermin (Pickering, ON) was named the X-Men’s Subway player of the game with 6 solo tackles and an interception. Axeman linebacker Bailey Feltmate (Moncton, NB) had 5 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles and a breakup.
The X-Men (6-1) will conclude the regular season at home against Mount Allison (3-4), while the Axemen (1-6) head to Halifax to take on the host Saint Mary’s Huskies (2-5).
With a win against Saint Mary’s, the Axemen could squeeze into the last spot of the playoffs. A loss to the Huskies will eliminate them.

The Mount Allison Mounties are headed back to the AUS football playoffs for the fifth straight season.
The Mounties, who won AUS championships in 2013 and 2014, defeated Saint Mary’s 39-9 on Seniors’ Day at Alumni Field.
The real story of the game came late in the second quarter when the Mounties scored 21 points in less than two minutes to take control of the game.
Both sides battled to a scoreless first quarter as teams traded punts and vied for field position.
The Mounties held much of the time of possession and eventually were able to set up junior kicker Ryan Lambert for a 37-yard field at 13:19 of the second quarter.
The score remained 3-0 until there were six minutes remaining in the first half, when the Mounties defence forced a Saint Mary’s safety to make it 5-0.
The Mounties then exploded for 21 points in less than two minutes during the final two and a half minutes of the second quarter.
Mount Allison drove 73 yards before being stopped on third and goal to turn the ball over on downs.
On the ensuing possession, after the Mounties defence held Saint Mary’s, Mount Allison freshman Dylan Cormier was able to block Brian Hope‘s punt and the Mounties recovered it in the end zone to take a 12-0 lead.
On the next Saint Mary’s possession, Mounties sophomore Phil Thompson intercepted Brock Berglund and returned it all the way back to the Huskies nine-yard line.
Two plays later, All-Canadian Chris Reid chugged in from four yards out to give the Mounties a 19-0 lead.
The Mounties defence again chased Saint Mary’s from the field quickly and, with good field position, Mount Allison went back to work.
Rookie quarterback Jakob Loucks found senior Dakota Brush in the back of the end zone to cap off a 44-yard drive.
After Lambert’s convert, the Mounties entered the half with a 26-0 lead.
The home side continued the scoring early in the third quarter as Lambert kicked his second field goal of the game after four minutes of play.
This one came from 32 yards and extended the Mounties lead to 29-0.
Six minutes later, Mount Allison put together another long drive, this time going 79 yards and finishing with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Loucks to sophomore Josh Hicks.
Saint Mary’s reached the scoreboard for the first time with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
After a punt return and a Mount Allison penalty, the Huskies started from the Mounties 15-yard line and took only two plays to score.
Derek Pisani capped off the short drive with a two-yard run for the major.
The ensuing convert was blocked by Donovan Glave as he broke through the line.
The Huskies added a field goal when Brian Hope hit from 37 yards with 5:37 remaining.
Lambert rounded out the scoring when he connected from 37 yards for his third field goal of the day.
The Mounties were led offensively by Chris Reid who ran for 164 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries.
Freshman quarterback Jakob Loucks was also impressive, going 17 of 24 for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
Josh Hicks had three catches for 103 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown catch.
In all, the Mounties collected 480 yards on offence on the day.
Huskies starting quarterback Brock Berglund was four of 10 for 43 yards and two interceptions before Trevor Erdmann took over in the second quarter. Leonardo Mantuila had 134 yards on 18 carries.
The Mounties will now close out the regular season at StFX on Saturday, Oct. 29 for their chance to clinch second place and hosting rights to the Subway AUS Football Semifinal on Nov. 5.
Saint Mary’s will host Acadia in Halifax in a game that will determine the final playoff team.

Huge 35-33 win for the Rams tonight not only clinched a @CWUAA postseason berth, but also a home playoff game! https://t.co/3i8ZJShfUu

The No. 8-ranked University of Regina Rams clinched a postseason berth and the right to host a Canada West semifinal game after outlasting the UBC Thunderbirds for a 35-33 win on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium.
After increasing their lead to nine points with a late 70-yard touchdown pass from Noah Picton to Mitchell Picton with 1:36 left, the Rams (5-2) surrendered a major to UBC just 56 seconds later after the Thunderbirds went on an eight-play, 79-yard scoring drive. But the Rams were able to recover the ensuing onside kick, with Riley Wilson coming down with the ball to seal the win for Regina.
“We’ve got a lot to learn on special teams and that helped make it a lot closer tonight than I wanted it to be,” Rams head coach Steve Bryce said. “But I was happy with how resilient we are and what we did in the fourth quarter to stay in the game. There were plenty of times we could have let down, but we didn’t.”
Noah Picton was 29-for-40 in the win, giving him 197 completions for the year. That breaks the Canada West single-season completions record, which was originally set at 182 by former Rams quarterback Marc Mueller in 2010 and matched last year by Saskatchewan’s Drew Burko.
Picton finished with 329 passing yards and threw four touchdowns in the win, two of which went to his cousin Mitchell Picton. Khalid Kornegay and Atlee Simon caught the other scores, with Picton finishing as the team’s top receiver with six catches for 134 yards. Kornegay had a team-leading seven receptions for 51 yards, while Simon rushed 19 times for a total of 111 yards as he hits triple digits in rushing for the third consecutive game.
Zack McEachern finished as the team’s leading tackler (9 solo, 5 assisted) and added a pass breakup, but starting safety Cord Delinte made two huge second-half plays. Delinte forced an incompletion with a devastating hit on UBC receiver Trevor Casey late in the third quarter, then picked off UBC quarterback Michael O’Connor with just over four minutes to go in the game. Danny Nesbitt and Kahlen Branning both forced fumbles for the Rams defence, while Jeff Propp had a big third-quarter sack for a loss of nine yards.
O’Connor was 28-for-47 for UBC, finishing with 364 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes to Will Watson. Watson had a total of 88 yards off a game-high total of eight catches, none more impressive than a one-handed catch in the end zone for the first of his two scores. Ben Cummings rushed 19 times for 129 yards.
Riley Jones led UBC’s defence with four tackles for loss, while Tanner Friesen had a 56-yard pick six late in the fourth. Evan Horton had two key fumble recoveries on special teams for UBC, first on a fumbled kickoff return in the third and again in the fourth on a fumbled punt return.
The Rams were fortunate to only be down 4-0 after a first quarter which was dominated by UBC. The Thunderbirds outgained the Rams by a 171-17 margin, with Cummings rushing for 79 of his 129 yards in the opening 15 minutes alone. The lone spark of the quarter for the Rams was a 48-yard kickoff return on a slick reverse to Kornegay, but UBC was only able to score on a 33-yard field goal midway through the quarter by Greg Hutchins and a single by Hutchins after a missed 36-yarder.
But the Rams got their first first down of the game on the opening play of the second quarter, part of a nine-play, 77-yard drive that was finished off by a 13-yard touchdown reception by Picton. UBC replied with a field goal to knot the game at 7-7, but the Rams engineered another nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by a 28-yard catch-and-run by Simon. Regina took a 14-8 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, special teams helped swing the momentum in UBC’s favour. The Thunderbirds took advantage of a short field and scored on Watson’s brilliant catch to go up 15-14, and on the kickoff Moortgat had trouble handling a squib kick and Horton came up with his first fumble recovery of the night. The Rams caught a break as UBC started out from the Regina 15, but only got a single point out of it after a missed field goal. UBC added another two points on a conceded safety after a Hutchins punt pinned the Rams inside their own one-yard line, and a Hutchins punt through the end zone late in the quarter gave UBC a 19-14 lead heading into the fourth.
But the tide turned early in the fourth, starting with Nesbitt’s forced fumble that was recovered by Grey McKen. That gave the Rams the ball on UBC’s 14, and two plays later Kornegay was in the end zone to put the Rams back into the lead for good. Picton engineered a six-play, 73-yard drive that Simon finished off from two yards out on the U of R’s next possession, giving the Rams a 28-19 advantage. The Rams forced a two-and-out on the next possession, but Blake Anaka fumbled on the ensuing punt and Horton pounced on it for his second recovery of the half. But Anaka’s fumble was essentially cancelled out by Delinte, who intercepted O’Connor and ran it out to the Regina 24-yard line. The Rams looked to be in good shape up by two possessions with under three minutes to go, but Friesen’s interception return gave new life to UBC. But after throwing the late pick, Noah Picton shrugged it off and found Mitchell Picton on a 2nd-and-12 situation for the 70-yard touchdown that would turn out to be the game-winning score.
After closing out the conference schedule next week against Manitoba, the Rams will then host an opponent to be determined on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Mosaic Stadium in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The Rams’ final home game of the conference postseason – whenever that might be – will be the final game played at Mosaic.
“Personally, having the opportunity to close out the old stadium might even mean more to me than opening up the new one earlier this year,” Bryce said. “This was my home field for nine years growing up, and I know that there’s a ton of people involved with the program that feel the same way.”
The Rams and the Bisons will meet next Saturday night (8:00 CDT) at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, while UBC (3-4) will host Canada West-leading Calgary (5-1) in a game they may need to win in order to qualify for the conference playoffs. That UBC/Calgary game is set for Saturday night with a 5:00 PDT kickoff.
NOTES: The Rams went a perfect 4-0 at Mosaic Stadium during the conference schedule this year, marking the third time in program history they’ve been perfect at home (2001, 2012) … Mitchell Picton broke a major University of Regina record in the win and tied another, as his 56 receptions this season breaks the old school record of 55 set by Addison Richards two seasons ago … with one game left in the Canada West schedule, Picton also has 11 touchdown catches this season which ties Jason Clermont’s U of R record set back in 2001.
