CIS recap (stats) Laval come back against Carleton [OT]

Trailing by 21 points at halftime, the Rouge et Or made a spectacular comeback to win 36-29 in overtime on Saturday night Carleton Ravens TELUS-Université Laval Stadium as part of a preparatory meeting.

Rookie Chadrick Henry was the hero in extra time, running in a pass by Samuel Chenard 21 yards. This same Chenard himself had allowed Laval to tie the game by successfully finger on a three-yard run, then spotting Jonathan Robert Breton for the two-point conversion, so that there were only four seconds table.

“Samuel is a good quarterback. He is very clever with the ball. He made some risky passes, but we are in August, there is no Vanier Cup win. I love his spirit and his competitiveness,” also praised his coach Glen Constantin.

He was pleased with the outcome of the meeting, despite some mistakes. “There was some nervousness, we missed tackles, we missed assignments. These are all things repairable. We knew that Carleton had an athletic team. It was a good test”.

Dissatisfied with the effort, at halftime Constantin has delivered one message to his team in the locker room. “Whatever the outcome of the game, I told them I wanted to see the character and toughness. They responded well.”

First half to the advantage of Carleton

Laval had the first points of the game on a safety touch. They added to this with a field goal from Dominic Lévesque and after a little more than five minutes, Laval was in front 5-0.

Carleton responded with 2:26 to play in the first quarter. After a great offensive push, the veteran quarterback Jesse Mills spotted Wilson Birch for a three-yard touchdown. It was 7-5.

Carleton’s Matthew Pickens scored the next TD and after a rouge the Ravens were ahead 15-5.

Laval seemed in good position to close the gap, bringing the ball into the opponent’s end, but Richard Hugo was intercepted by Dan O’Mara, who sprinted 102 yards for a TD to put Carleton ahead 23-5.

Laval returned the favour when Cédric Lussier-Roy had his own pick six. Carleton added a 21-yard field goal moments later, and both teams returned to the locker room with a score of 26-5 in favour of the visitors.

The third quarter started like the first – with a safety touch for Laval. A single and two field goals by Lévesque (35 and 37 yards) saw Laval cut the lead to 26-14.

In the fourth, Carleton replied with a 39-yard field goal to make the score 29-14. Then, Laval”s Sébastien Tight entered the end zone on a one-yard run, bringing the score to 29-21 Carleton. Laval refused to give up, and efforts were finally rewarded overtime.

The Rouge et Or will begin its 2016 regular season in two weeks, on Saturday September 3 at 19h, while the Montreal Carabins will be the visitors to the TELUS-Université Laval Stadium. Tickets for this event are available online or at the ticket Rouge et Or at 418 656-FOOT (3668).
