Clearer playoff picture

While there is only one week remaining in the regular season of the Northern Football Conference (NFC), the playoff picture is looking much clearer after this past weekend’s action.

In the East Division, the Montreal Transit will play host to the Toronto Raiders while the Durham Hawkeyes and the Ottawa Invaders will tangle in the other matchup.  This week’s games will determine which team –either the Invaders or Hawkeyes will host the playoff game.

As for the West Division, Sault Ste. Marie Steelers will host the Sudbury Spartans while the Tri City Outlaws and Sarnia Imperials will meet in the other game.  This upcoming weekend’s games will decide which of the two teams, the Outlaws or Imperials will host the game.

In this past week’s action, the Ottawa Invaders moved to 5-2 on the season as the team shutout the Sudbury Spartans 58-0.  Running back TJ Williams led the way for the victors as he scored three touchdowns (20 yard, 9 yard and 14 yard touchdown runs) while Andrew Foss (16 yard run), Kory Camp (27 yard run), Adam Gourgon (10 yard run), Kevin Coombs (18 yard catch) and Brandon Weekes (23 yard catch) each added a major. Kicker Jeff Morris was successful on eight conversion attempts.

At halftime, the Invaders enjoyed a 30-0 lead over the Spartans.

Meanwhile, the Durham Hawkeyes crushed the winless Oakville Longhorns 58-14 to improve their regular season record to 5-2.  Running back Kris Newman accumulated 103 rushing yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns (both in the second half of the game) to lead the Hawkeyes.  A highlight for the Hawkeyes in the first quarter was when Loxley Prince returned a kick for a 100 yard touchdown run.  Also in the same quarter, Delroy George had a 30 yard fumble return touchdown while Hawkeyes pivot Paul Martin connected with Justene Edwards for a 78 yard touchdown reception.

In the second half, running back Dwight Lewis scored two majors while racking up 78 rushing yards on six carries.  Ricky Clarke also scored in the half on a 45 yard run. Kicker Dumitru Ionita booted eight PAT’s.

The Hawkeyes had a 22-14 lead over the Longhorns at the half.

As for the Longhorns, pivot Mack Blewett had 19 completions in 29 attempts and scored a touchdown on a one yard quarterback sneak. In the first quarter, Blewett connected with Eric Dowling for a 10 yard touchdown reception. Dowling had 73 receiving yards on five catches in a losing cause.

In the other game, running back DeShawn Hayes ran the ball into end zone for a five yard score with 4:50 remaining in the game to propel the Sarnia Imperials to an 18-12 win over the Tri-City Outlaws.  Hayes also had a 50 yard touchdown run in the first half of the game and had 72 rushing yards on 12 carries. Kicker Kevin Allaer had two PAT’s and was successful on a 15 yard field goal attempt.

On defense, John Bain registered eight tackles for the Imperials.
