Hometown dream

Sherbrooke running back opts to begin CIS career at home

Ever since he was a young boy, Guillaume Labbe dreamed about playing in front of the hometown crowd.

Finally, his dream will become a reality.  The 5’9 183 pound running back will embark on his future CIS career with the Sherbrooke Vert et Or.

Recently, Labbe committed to the hometown school for the 2014 RSEQ season.

“I think my motivation to play with Sherbrooke comes from my early days as a football player,” expressed Labbe of his decision.  “I have always been proud of my town and the people in it.”

“I have trained and committed to this sport at a very young age. I have spent countless hours practicing and hitting the weights with hopes of having a chance at football.”

Not only through his experience of playing for the provincial team did he develop a good relationship with Vert et Or coaches, but it has also given him confidence that he is able to achieve new heights in the sports discipline.

“Having played Team Québec has helped my career,” explained the Sherbrooke running back.  “The coaching staff was amazing and pushed me to perform, they made me realize the potential I had as an athlete.”

“Coach Mathieu Pronovost and David Lessard helped me and I developed a good relationship with them. Both of them coach for Sherbrooke.”

While the football program and academics played a part in his decision, the opportunity to play at home was too good of an offer for Labbe to pass up.

“My friends and family have always been very supportive of my lifestyle and playing for Sherbrooke in a sense, is my way of showing them my appreciation for their support,” commented Labbe.  “Sherbrooke seemed so attractive to me because the school is great and the football program even better.”

“I want to have a chance to develop my football skills but also my intellectual skills, which will be important for me after football.”

Labbe joins the Vert et Or after completing his CEGEP career with Division 2 team, Sherbrooke Volontaires. In 2013, the running back rushed for 837 yards (average of 6.5 yards per carry) and scored 10 touchdowns in seven games.  The previous year (2012), he rushed for 1232 yards (average of 7.6 yards per carry) and scored eight touchdowns in eight games.
