LB McCutchin earns his captaincy

#51 Eric McCutchin

Eric McCutchin completed his 6th season of football with the Portage Trojans from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. In 2016 Eric recorded 29 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 1 sack.

The young linebacker enjoys reading and reacting to an offence, as well as the challenge of learning the way different offences play and what he needs to do to counter them.

When Eric first joined the Trojans he was injured and unable to play the entire season. However, this didn’t get him down and he still went to every practice and did conditioning, strength training and footwork drills with his team.

“I did offensive stats the whole season,” replied Eric. “Because of this, I was captain in my first season playing with the Trojans.”

Once he’s finished high school Eric would like to get an education from football, and he also plans on earning a post-secondary degree.

Currently Eric hasn’t had much recruiting at this time. He’s sent an e-mail to a couple of schools, but nothing formal.

This offseason Eric will be in the weight room, and he will also be running. He mentioned, “During the season I will focus more on the more technical parts of my position such as keying the O-line.”

The most influential people in Eric’s life have been his parents. “They are always supporting me with football and encouraging me to do my best to improve,” said Eric.

I asked Eric what football has meant to him, he responded, “It means an opportunity to get an education so that I can get a good job.” Football is also where Eric’s met many of his past and current friends.

From his years of playing football, Eric has learned the importance of respect and sportsmanship. He’s also learned leadership skills, how to be mentally tough and the importance of it.
