Sabres standout looking for CIS suitors who can meets recruitment goals

Even though at a young age Derek has already shown that he is quite a seasoned player when it comes to the game of football. He has played on four different teams through the levels prior to joining the Wetaskiwin Sabres of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA).
The offensive lineman was the recipent of the Shock Pride Award twice as the Offensive Lineman of the Year in his first and second season with the Sabres.
Derek is actively looking for a CIS university with a solid Kinesiology program. Although he has not done any official visits or offers yet he has been contacted by a few universities.
As for the direction of the Kinesiology major, he is still unsure on how he would like to use it. But these days his main goal is to keep his grades up and he will focus more on visits and recruiting in the year to come.
A high moment for Derek last season was when he played and exhibition game against a team considered being a higher quality. Just playing the game was worth the memory. Another monumental moment was being able to make it to second cuts for Team Alberta under-18 as one of the top 19 linesmen and top three centres in the province.
Generally four days a week, Derek works on getting a stronger build but he is focusing on upper body, speed training and footwork with sprints. Lastly with the training he mentions that this upcoming year will be about spending a lot of time in the gym trying to gain muscle and conditioning.
The people who have influenced Derek over the years is long, with almost every coach leaving a sense of gratitude and lessons from each. Of course at the top of the list is his parents, for the love and the support they have given him and for teaching him to be the best person he can be.
With each coach Derek is quick to thank them and gives kudos for the little to big thing he was taught by them.
“Don Loov who coached me in atom, midget and now high school because he’s taught me a lot and has been a great coach for me,” says Derek. “Steve Pelech my midget line coach because he has also taught me a lot about football, but also given me a person to talk to if I ever need advice or have a question.”
“Nick Fricke who coached me in pee-wee and midget because he’s taught me a lot about playing with passion and keeping my heart on my sleeve. Theren Churchill who coached me in midget and has given me a lot of advice in continuing to go to the next level. Also Brett MacNeil because he has helped me out so much in my blocking and especially my pass blocking.” Nothing but praises for all of these individuals who have made an impact on this young man’s life.”
