OUA players of week 6: Granberg, Dyer, Tropea

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 7, 2012.

OFFENCE: Ryan Granberg, Queen’s Gaels, Running back

Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) carried the ball 31 times for 193 yards, both season-highs, as the No. 4 Gaels defeated Windsor 24-7 on Saturday night. The fourth-year running back accounted for 40 percent of the Gaels’ 477 total yards in the game. Following his performance on Thanksgiving weekend, Granberg has retaken the national lead in rushing yards, with 780 on the year.
DEFENCE: Cory Dyer, Queen’s Gaels, Lineman

Cory Dyer (Gananoque, Ont.) led the Queen’s Gaels defence with 4.5 sacks, all in the first half, as Queen’s shut down the Windsor offence on Saturday night. The 4.5 sacks was just one short of the Queen’s single game record. Dyer’s 4.5 sacks was part of a seven-sack performance by the Gaels defence that held the Lancers to only 57 yards in the first half. The second-year lineman finished with a team-high 5.5 tackles on the day. He now has 9.5 sacks on the year and is tied for second in the OUA record book.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Julian Tropea, Guelph Gryphons, Kicker

Julian Tropea (Niagara Falls, Ont.) kicked a 27-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in regulation to lead the then No. 9 Guelph Gryphons over the then No. 7 Western Mustangs at Alumni Stadium on Saturday. The fourth-year kicker was good on all five of his attempts, splitting the uprights from 22, 27, 32, 41 and 42 yards. Tropea was crucial in the final quarter, making three of his five field goals in the last seven minutes of the game, including his game-high 42-yarder with only four minutes on the clock that allowed the Gryphons to reclaim the lead. He also added three extra points, tallying 18 of Guelph’s 42 points in the 42-39 game.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
