OVFL JV: Wildcats able to dent but not break Riders

The JV Metro Toronto Wildcats are 1-1 after losing to the Myers Riders 35-14. In their first two games, the Riders kept their opponents to a shutout. This was the first game that any team in the OVFL has been able to put up any points against the fearsome Riders.

“Our offense didn’t execute and we made too many mistakes,” Says head coach Ed Babin. “We had a couple of good plays, but were unable to the play the way we needed to.”

A couple of key errors made the difference this weekend. A fumble on the Wildcats’ own four yard line four yard line, followed by a strange punt return touchdown put the Riders out of reach on the scoreboard.

In spite of the offensive miscues, the Wildcat defense was able to shine. “Our defense was excellent and showed great ability,” Says Babin. Once again linebackers Deshawn Stevens and Jesse Amaral helped stop the Rider offense, alongside defensive back Luc Babin.

There were several offensive standouts as quarterbacks Cole McFarlane and Jack Vernon played good games. Meanwhile Esson Hamilton had another great game as the team’s top receiver.

The long ride from Toronto to the Ottawa area is never easy for a team. “Driving a long distance may have contributed to the loss,” Says Babin. “However, other teams make the same trip all the time so it is no excuse.”

Although the Wildcats didn’t come out with one for the win column, Ed Babin is excited about the possibilities of a rematch saying, “We want to play them again!”

With the loss, the Wildcats move down to eighth place. Next week they will be at home against the Markham Raiders who are also 1-1. The game will be this Saturday at 3:00PM at Ester Shiner Stadium.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
