TORONTO– British Columbia native Matt McGarva may have an opportunity to play professionally in front of his home crowd, as the standout Windsor Lancer defensive back was selected 33rd overall by the B.C. Lions in the 2013 CFL Draft on Monday afternoon.
McGarva was named a second team all-Canadian in 2011 after finishing the season with a superb 48 tackles as well as one touchdown for the Lancers. The Business major went on to earn his second-striaght OUA all-star nod last fall in his final year of eligibility with Windsor, despite playing just four games.
A participant in the 2012 CIS East-West Bowl, McGarva’s skill-set went beyond the turf, as he earned a CIS Academic all-Canadian in 2011-12 and was also named the Forge Fitness Centre Employee of the Year in the Athletics and Recreation Department at the University of Windsor this Spring.
“I am extremely proud and excited for Matt, especially since BC is his hometown and has been a long time fan,” said Lancers coach Joe D’Amore. “He will go in there from day one and compete for a roster spot.”
This is the second year in a row that a Lancer has been taken in the CFL Draft, as fellow defensive back Shea Pierre was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts last season.
