There are quite a few similarities between the New Westminster Hyacks (3-3) and Centennial Centaurs (3-4) – two teams that will clash in the opening round of the BC High School Football Triple A Varsity playoffs.

While neither team is considered as necessarily being contenders for the title, both have had solid seasons and both enter these playoffs with the belief that they might be able to pull off a major upset along the way.

For that to happen, however, they’ll have to find a way to get to the quarterfinal at the other’s expense. The Hyacks defeated the Centaurs 44-22 earlier this year in their homecoming game – an exhibition contest – but history will have little bearing under the Friday night lights at Mercer Stadium.

Centennial dropped a 37-6 decision to Lord Tweedsmuir in their season finale while New West comes into the game following a thrilling but heartbreaking 24-21 loss to Handsworth. The Hyacks’ Tyrone Morgan rushed for 148 yards and 2 TDs on 19 carries, while Angelo Tanjuaquio had 124 yards and a TD on 17 carries in that contest.

Back in September, Tanjuaquio accounted for 18 points (2 TDs & 3 2-pt converts) and Julian Ramirez rushed for 95 yards and a TD versus Centennial.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
