The Cambridge Varsity Lions lost a tough game on Saturday against the Guelph Bears, a penalty filled game which ended with Guelph kicking a twenty-one yard field goal for the 30-28 point victory.
The scoring started early with Guelph returning a missed field goal attempt in the first quarter for a 110 yard touchdown. The Lions quickly responded with an 11 yard field goal which cut Guelph’s lead to 7-4. The game went back and forth late into the fouth quarter, as the Lions rallied to take a 28-27 lead with two munutes left before Guelph scored a 21 yard feild goal for the win.
The Lions offence is in need of improvements as they took the lead on three separate occasions but were unable to take advantage of ball possession in some key situations. Quarterback James Roberts went 23 for 45 with 5 interceptions, two of which were run back for Guelph defensive touchdowns. The Lions run game was also held to a stand still by the tough Bears defence combining for just 138 yards. Wide Receiver Simon Keeksma however had an outstanding game making nine of eleven catches for a total yardage of 114.

On the defensive end the Lions were led by Dequan French-Gray and Robin Petrie, who put in very strong efforts, holding the Guelph offence to just two touchdowns and one field goal. The Lions are looking to learn from this loss to the Bears and build on the positives going into Saturday’s game at 8:00 PM in Brampton against the Bulldogs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
